Hi all,

I've got a bunch of quicktime .MOV files on my desk top that I'd like to play on my PPC (specifically the ones from the AniMatrix). Does anyone know of a (free) tool that can do a reasonable job of the conversion? I found one command line utility but I can't get it to work.

Any ideas?

What is the command-line utility?

It's called mov2avi.

I haven't tried mov2avi yet, I use the old standby - QuickTime Pro, which exports to .avi then I can play around with the .avi file in VirtualDub.

I did lookup mov2avi and found this guide (http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/mov2divx.html) which lists some other software packages to do the trick.

Also there's a gui (http://www.wminds.com/downloads/mov2avigui/) for mov2avi that might help? I always hated command-line stuff, way too DOSish for my tastes. :) Also, the site with the gui has forums that might help with your specific error/problem.

For converting Mov's to something else (eg DivX) you could try Radtools (http://www.radgametools.com/down/bink/radtools.exe) (freeware) or Vegas video (sorry don't have a link at hand) both can convert Quicktime.

But I seem to remember that I tried to convert one of the animatrix movies with RAD Videotools and I couldn't get the audio to convert. Quicktime movies have a tendency to have exotic audio codecs...*sigh*

I don't think mov2avi.exe will work, if its the tool I think it is, it is only ment for converting reaaaaaally old (cinepak?) quicktime movies, not the new ones which use mpeg4 codecs and the likes.

Check this link (http://www.dvdrhelp.com/mov2avi.htm) for some explanation on how to use RADtools.

EO Video is another tool that can convert Quicktime movies, this one converts the sound aswell.

I just tried it with 'The second renaissance part1' BUT since that quicktime movie contains TWO audio tracks (one for the first 10 or so seconds of sound and one track for the rest of the movie), EO only converts one: the second track... which results in total out of sync sound. I solved this problem by opening the movie in Quicktime and cutting the first 12 seconds (the duration of the first soundtrack is about 10sec) of the movie and then 'Export' to a new self contained movie and then open that new file in EO Video and encoding it. This works OK without the need to first decompress it to a large Uncompressed AVI.

EO Video can be found here (http://www.eo-video.com) It's not free but they give you a generous 30 days try-out, full working version to test the program.

*UPDATE*

After watching the whole movie it struck me that the video is clipped for some reason. I've played around in EO video but can't find any way to resolve this... or change it. So now to make things 'easy':

I've converted the Audio in EO-Video and done the video conversion with RADtools. After that I muxed the audio and video back together in VirtualDub.

:D Budda, thanks. I don't have a chance to fine tune it all right now but I've got it basically working with EO Video. Very Impressed :way to go:
