View Full Version : Would this be possible?

OK...

My cell phone is a LG LX5350 (Sprint PCS with Vision service) and it's the only Sprint phone that can support a serial connection to a Pocket PC and there are cables (such as the Gomadic) to connect a Pocket PC to the LG 5350 to use the Vision service...

However I have an iPAQ h1910 (no serial support) :(

Currently the only way to connect the 1910 to any other device for internet access is through the IR port... and there (currently) are no IrDA phones for Sprint PCS and Vision service. (Double :( ) And yes I know about the upcoming SonyEricsson T608 with BT and IrDA, but there's no release date yet.

I did a search and found these: (1) a serial to IR adapter, and (2) this serial connector for the LG 5350

Serial to IR -> http://www.actisys.com/ac200-220.html
Serial adapter for LG -> http://cellularaccessory.com/kwa.html

My question... would it be possible at all to somehow connect the 1910 using IR to the LG 5350 by using these adapters? Has anyone done this before?

I know about the terms of service of PCS Vision and whatnot, but this would not be abused (only to check emails, etc.) and Sprint will leave you alone as long as there is no abuse (check the threads over at SprintUsers.com)

It would be great to be able to use my h1910 to check emails using an adapter like this, if it is possible...

Any opinions or comments? Thanks.

I would advise against the IR/Serial adaptor. It would be cumbersome and defeat the purpose of wireless internet. I connect occasionally to the internet using my IR enabled Nokia and iPAQ 1910, and the pages load very slowly. I wish the people at HP would have thought out the 1910's design out more thoroughly. The lack of an SDIO slot and standard serial connection make it very difficult to add any peripherals to a device with little expandibility options. It kind of makes me think they purposely put these limits on the 1910...

I kind of got sidetracked. The best way to go would be a serial cable. Maybe they'll come up with one compatible with the iPAQ soon. Good luck. :D

First note... The lack of capabilities in the 1910 is not an oversight, it is quite likely an informed decision to have devices available at a variety of pricepoints. See various other threads on the subject.

Secondly... As for the serial link, I presume you mean RS-232. From reading hereabouts I thought the 1910 only had USB capability and not RS-232. At which point the IR sol'n looks somewhat better.

That's my impression, HP most certainly did this on purpose to offer this product at this price point... just an inexpensive (though very capable) PDA mostly for people who need PIM functionality with the added plus of multimedia capabilities of the Pocket PC... however what happened was that even power users fell in love with this (incredibly small) form factor and now are looking for ways to add wireless connectivity to it (evidenced by all the previous posts related to the possibility of SDIO in the 1910).

Right... I meant RS-232... the LG 5350 has serial (RS-232) and USB (slave). There's a cable to connect the LG 5350 to a PC's serial port... my question is, would it be possible to add IrDA connectivity to the LG 5350 by using this serial to IR adapter, and would it be possible to connect my h1910 (via IR) with the LG for wireless internet access? I know it might be slow and all the other drawbacks... I just want to know whether someone has done this before... Anyone? :)

Are you sure that's a function of the IR? IR can easily communicate over 100kbps.

Ivan, this might work -- as long as the IR adapter can be used backwards, with the phone (it's classically designed to be used with the PC). You might want to check with the manufacturer. There will also be some power implications, too. But good sleuthing! :)

Maybe it's just my handheld, or the lighting conditions, but have any of you tried transferring files using the IR port? It is slow, regardless of what the stats say. My two cents

Oh, absolutely it's slow. IR will be comparable to serial, but noticeably slower than USB. Still, it should be more than good enough for a cell connection, which is slower than even ActiveSync.
