I have just recently, in the past week or so, started getting a new kind of pop-up ad that opens a window that says "Save". It says it is not part of the web site you visit,w hich makes me think it is activated by some bot that monitors where you go and sneds content from a server that is similar to where you go. But I can't find this bot on my computer.

There is no way to turn off the ads, just close them until you go to the next web page. Not only have I gotten them on my home system, I am getting them on my work computer. I cannot add any software at work (admins took away my right!!) and so unless my IT department does something about it, I'm stuck with them when I have to go to the web.

Anyone else getting these and have you found a way to stop them?

You can download Spybot Search and Destroy (http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10194058.html?tag=lst-0-1) to try to eradicate the pop-up causer.

It should find the culprit.

Sounds like you have some Spyware/Adware installed on your machine. These programs are essentially a kind of Trojan Horse. They install themselves with your permission, but usually in a tricky way--like along with a piece of software you installed or sometimes if you click "yes" to a dialog from a web site asking if you want to install their special "viewer" or something like that.

There are lots of help sites (http://www.cexx.org/adware.htm) out there to tell you how to get rid of these programs and how to avoid them in the future.

Thanks, and it did. This Save bot seems different...new generation to me. As much as I hate them, kudos to the hacks that creatively write new code to annoy us. In someone's utopia, working on stuff like that is pretty cool & fun, getting around problems. Now in MY Utopia, I get to shoot them all!!

I get those stupid 'SAVE' popups but Spybot doesn't detect anything. Do you know what the name of the thing was or where it was stored?

It was installed with Weathercast. Deleted both.

Lavasoft's Ad-aware (google, you'll find it), new version, does a great job. they lost a lot of cred when they abandoned updates for hte last version for a few months, but the program rocks. With it, you might determine if unexplained browser behavior is a spybot, or someone's tracking cookie (I normally seem to pick up 4-5 in a month).

ONLY 4-5 a month, you say? Yes. I use Webwasher (webwasher.com). Works well blocking banners, cookies, schtuff like that.

I also use a new plug-in for IE called Popup Manager. www.endpopups.com. Works pretty damn well. Currently freeware.

Actually, all these are freeware/shareware for personal, non commercial use. Viva the GNU generation.

I just wanted to say - I started using the endpopups app last night and I love it!! Thanks for posting it!

I've gone to a few sites trying to get a pop-up to come up and not one yet... :D
