they said that AT&T does not support the email capabilities of the SX56 at this time! They said to send an email you have to go online via gsm to a website like hotmail or msn.

If you wanted to receive your home or work email on the SX you would have to sign up for additional service on a program they have called 'office online'. you could not respond to email or send this way however.

They said email is a pain for wireless...........

I think paying 150 a month for two units is a pain too! but I do.

I think they should work it out. is it really that tough? Does Tmobile do it?

They're not quite being accurate.

1. You can't easily send email over SMS, if that's what you're trying to do. On T-Mobile, you can, but it's undocumented and unsupported. Not sure about AT&T.

2. As for a standard POP3 email account: I think you can receive mail, without any problems -- just set up a new service in Inbox (go to Services -> New Service). Sending is a bit tricky -- you need an SMTP server to send mail out on, and if AT&T doesn't provide one you need an SMTP server that supports "authentication". T-Mobile now has a SMTP server (myemail.t-mobile.com), so I've managed to get that to work.

Janak, you may remember that I had T Mobile first before going AT&T. The ONLY reason I traded is because the T Mobile had zero signal where I go! None at home and none at work. That is where I am most of the time.

If it's undocumented, how does one find out about it? They (ATT) said that they cannot control spam at this time, so they don't want to set up for email. I can almost understand as it is my bandwidth they would be watching go thru the roof past what I am allowed (8MB/mo).

It does smudge the bloom off'n my new rose however!

P.S. The Inbox/services/new service is dimmed and will not allow a new service.

First - POP3 should work in-and-of itself by setting up a new service. Have you tried that?

As for email-over-SMS, see this (http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&selm=OP5HYUcWCHA.1704%40tkmsftngp10) for T-Mobile; AT&T would likely vary.

To create a new service and make the new service item active, you have to ensure that all existing services are not connected. So take your PPC out of the cradle, switch off any wireless connectivity and remove any USB cables. Then you should be able to add a new service.

hmmm. when I turn off the phone signal, then go to inbox and services, sms still has an * next to it. any other options are grayed out.

I did notice that a site called mail2pda.com will allow mail coming and going from anywhere almost. My home email acct, yahoo, hotmail, whatever.

it does not check automatically however. I have to use the browser and go up on the net to ck.

AT&T does have somehing called officeonline, but dont know what that will do for me. it is an extra chg of 2.99 a month $

You can also try http://smtp.com if you need an smtp server that does not require smtp authentication.
