View Full Version : Taking PPCT threads to bed..

After reading the great Introduction to Creating Reader Documents 1 and 2 a while back, I went ahead and tried the Word plug-in. I run Word XP and it works very fine and very fast. But I bet there’s a better way to do this with some other reader and ebook maker for people not using MS Reader.
Lately I’ve been pretty hooked onto the PPCT forums and have read every single post from the last couple of weeks. But sometimes, posts run into 20+ replies and it takes a long time going through them. I usually read them right before going to bed, so I have often ended up nodding off reading them (*duck*)
So here’s the solution I came up with for really long posts…

Setup: Word XP, Read in Reader Plug-in

Login to PPCT 0X
Go to the topic I want to transfer to my PPC.
Click on Printable Version on the top right
Do a CTRL-A and then CTRL-C
Open up a new Word doc and then CTRL-V
Usually, threads have quotes within them. These quotes show up as nested tables and the Read in Reader plug-in doesn’t support nested tables yet.
So my workaround is –
Do a CTRL-A in Word
Then Table | Convert | Text to Table
Choose default settings
Then Table | Convert | Table to Text
Choose default settings
This automatically removes all tables.
(I used to Merge Cells earlier, but this is not required and reduces a step)

Next thing I do to distinguish between Quotes and new posts is –
Right-click within any quote
Select all similar instances
Click on the italics button on the toolbar
That’s it.

All that’s left to do is-
Scroll to the top of document.
Copy the title of the thread
Save the .doc with that name
And then run the reader plug-in and use the thread name as .lit title.
Click OK and the file should transfer in seconds!

Takes less than a minute after I got used to the steps and now I get to enjoy PPCT even longer. This is the el-cheapo option compared to shelling out $ for Repligo or a wireless router.

Any hints on when that might be... or are you under an NDA?

Fred (struggling to post this in PIE right now)

You know, Jason... It's not nice to torture your loyal readers with promises of mobile forums :-)

Couldn't you just open the print only page's URL in Word? ;)

Also ... usually I cut adn past into Front Page (makes a cleaner HTML doc), then use Mobipocket publisher to process the page into a .PRC ebook, though it will also create a .LIT ebook. ,:)
