I don't have a DVD drive but my friend converted a couple of dvd's to .AVI files for me. The divx player is able to play them but I want to shrink them down to be able to fit on a 256mb card. They have already been ripped a certain way, so is there a way to compress them even further or did that need to be done when it was first ripped. I have downloaded all of the guides and software from pocket matrix so I should be able to do it if it is possible. Thanks.

You could use a tool like:
http://www.winmpg.com/

I'm sure there are tons of free ones out there for the finding though...

What you want to do is perfectly possible, all you need is VirtualDub and the DivX codec 5.02.

Here's a small short walkthrough:

-Open the big avi in virtualdub.
-Under Video/filters apply the resize filter and resize the movie to a size for the PPC, depending on what the aspect ratio of the movie is. 320x176 (16:9) or 320x128 (2,35:1)
-apply a 'rotate' to rotate the movie 90 degrees
-Click Audio/Full processing mode
-In Audio/Conversion set the sound to mono (personal choice)
-set Audio/compression to MP3 with 32kbps 44kHz Mono or something like that
-set Audio/interleaving to 500 ms
-set the DivX 5.02 codec in Video/Compression and in 'Configure' to '2 pass, first pass'
-set the video bitrate to 200 or 250kbps
-go to File/Save as AVI give it the name A.avi

wait till its finished, then

-goto Video/Compression/Configure and set it to '2 pass, second pass'
-go to File/Save as AVI and give the name B.avi

wait for it to finish and after that you're done. You can delete A.avi. Now copy B.avi (which should have a filesize 130 and +/-200MB depending on your choice of settings) to your PPC and enjoy

Have fun
