The USB connection on my 32Mb XDA has died. When I try to connect the XDA does not make any attempt to connect - doesn't show the dialog and doesn't put up the whirling grey/green symbol. I've tried doing a hard reset and the same thing happens, so the connection between the cradle and the XDA must have failed. The retailer will replace all the relevant bits, but I'm wondering about asking for an upgrade to 64Mb at the same time. The thing is that restoring my device is entirely dependent on using a backup from my SD card. I don't use Outlook so I've never synchronised my contacts, and now that USB has died I can't. I don't have infra-red, and anyway I've been told that the first synch must be done over USB anyway.
If I can restore the backups I have from my 32Mb XDA to a 64Mb, then I'll try to get the upgrade. But if it isn't possible, then I'd rather stick with 32Mb and keep my data. Anyone know if this restore is possible?

My hunch would be "no", that it wouldn't work, but I've never tried it or heard of anyone trying it, so it's impossible to say for sure. This is an interesting example of something Microsoft never predicted - someone using their Pocket PC as a stand-alone device.
You might have more luck with a 3rd party backup tool like Pocket Backup 2.0 from www.spritesoftware.com - they might even be able to advise you on whether or not it would work.

I don't use it as a totally stand alone device - I use a guest connection to do backups, install software and transfer files. The only thing I don't do is synchronise, because I have no use for contacts etc. in Outlook. Until now backup to SD card or PC has answered my needs.

Looks like an interesting tool. If I already had a backup made with it, then indeed it might work. However it isn't going to help me now. Pocket Backup saves to a PC or network share when connected via ActiveSync - but I can't connect via Active Sync. I have no way to connect my XDA to a PC any more, so the only tool that would solve my problem would be one that saves its back ups to an SD card.
