Is it true the dell axims now have PXA255 X-scale's? If they do I'm probably gonna get one soon coz i'm fed up of waiting for PPC2003. Whats the StrataFlash ROM mean? And does anyone who owns one find them to be too big, coz they look really big. Thanks.

It's not that big unless you previously owned a 1910 :)

And yes, since the 250 chip is not being manufactured anymore, new Dells are now shipping with the 255 chip. Benchmarks have shown slight improvements in speed; along with the new ROM update, it may be even faster :)

Check out the Dell forum for more discussion

I just replaced my HP Jornada 568 with an Axim, and I am very pleased with it. While it is true that there are smaller PPCs out there, it is only marginally bigger than my Jornada, and it is much more expandable than devices like the HP 1910. Overall I have found it to be a good mix of expandability, performance, size and cost. FYI - it looks bigger than it is - I had an impression of a large device, and it's really not.

I did get one with the new PXA255 and the new ROM, and benchmarks indicate some performance improvements. As for the StrataFlash, I think that is just a brand name from Intel. It has 48 Mb of ROM, with about 21 Mb available to the user. I would expect it to be upgradeable to the next OS revision.

Thank you you both, your answers have been very helpful. Now I ust have to find one that I know has a PXA255. Do you think if I ordered one from Dell.co.uk they would have the 255's yet?

The 255 chip has been in US Axims for about a month now. Don't know about the UK, but Dell's business model doesn't call for large inventories of product kicking around. I think you would be in with a good chance.

Best if you can track down someone in the UK who has just gotten one delivered.

No... because refurbished means it was manufactured a whiles back.

I just recieved my Axim last week and it doesn't have the PXA255. Grr. I'm tempted to exchange it, but with my luck I won't get the PXA255.

I thought all the new ones did. I've had mine a month now.
Did you look in that sysinfo.txt file? If you have the new processor it will be listed as PXA250 C1 Stepping.

Exactly, when you update the ROM from A00 to A02 it will actually call it a PXA255. The PXA250's are PXA250 B2 stepping and the PXA255's are PXA250 C1 stepping until the ROM update.

I just ordered mine, fingers crossed for the PXA255. If it says PXA250 C1 stepping, will it have 200Mhz system bus???

Nope, only the processor is different. This is because Intel have stopped production of the PXA250 and the PXA255 is it's replacement. Dell have just dropped the new one in without making any hardware changes.

So far as I know, the only PPC on the market that supports the new features of the PXA255 is the Toshiba e750.
