RAM is where all the programs you install will be stored, while ROM is where all the built-in programs are stored. You can add/delete all the programs you like in RAM. You can not delete or change the programs in ROM unless you install an update for it that is supplied by the company.
RAM = Random Access Memory
ROM = Read Only Memory
The fact that the Axim has 32MB RAM means it has half the useable space of your current iPAQ. So I would suggest that you choose one with 64MB RAM otherwise you are just down grading your PPC in terms of memory.

I could use the built in 32mbs for ram and the 64mb card that comes with it for storage?

Of course you could also get the Advanced model Axim which has 64M of RAM and 48 ROM.

I have the advanced version and I was told by somebody on this board that the extra rom can be used as storage.
I noticed that it shows "built in storage" as well as the 64 megs of ram. I asked about it and somebody said that the built-in storage is the extra ROM that is available.
