Are there any programs that scan your contacts and put their birthday as a calender entry?

Besides the already mentioned programs this is done natively by filling in the birthday in Contacts, once you're done sync with Outlook and its added to Calender automatically.
Like I said the trick is you must sync Pocket Contacts and Calender with Outlook after you're done. Give it a shot!

It's also an option in PocketInformant, which can also show anniversaries, holidays, recurring appointments

Check out DateMate (http://www.mobimate.com/ppc/datemate/index.shtml). It's been marked down to $9.95, and I have been using it since my Palm III days....(when I switched to PocketPC, they graciously let me convert my registration as well!)
