I have one obvious one: Ogg support! And preferably have the mixer support Ogg. I currently have a player with both (iPlay), but I know there are other people who are interested in such functionality and who don't need the other features iPlay has.

First of all, GREAT PRODUCT. Now for my suggestions:
1) Add an option to crossfade the audio between tracks.
2) Add a simple VU meter to the minimized (one line version of the player). By the way, I LOVE the minimized version that lets me see all the crucial info while playing MP3's while also letting me see what is behind it, like all the plugins on my Today screen. I also love that it lets me use the buttons to control it even when it is not in the foreground.
3) For "connected" or WiFi PDAs, support streaming audio such as the streams on shoutcast.com.
4) Give the shuffle feature a bit of "memory" so that it doesn't repeat songs that it played recently. Also, make the "previous" button actually go to the track previously played (even when shuffling).
5) Support signal processing effects like "hall", "stadium", "surround", etc. If you really want to go crazy you could do additional processing to change the characteristic of the music itself, for example make a dance version of a song by adding extra beats and effects. This would take some very clever software but the end result could be amazing. Ok, maybe I'm going too far here.
6) Additional visualization options for different graphical patterns that follow the music.
7) OK, trying to think out of the box here...something I think would be really cool would be an automatic "remixer" that mixed all the songs in the playlist, fitting them together based on tempo/beat and resulting in one continuous "megamix" that transitioned between different portions of all the songs. I've heard DJ's create mixes like this before but I've never heard of anyone writing software to automate it.
8) A replacement for the top bar, similar to WisBar or Icbar, but with player controls. Squeeze whatever you can in there, like the basic player controls, track name, and track time. Note: The source code for WisBar can be obtained free, but I don't think it can be used in a "for profit" product so that might not be helpful to you.
9) How about a "variable" playlist, so I can just point it to my storage card or to a particular folder and it will always play everything there, even when I change the files over time. No big deal, but this would save me from needing to create a new playlist every time I change the MP3 files on my storage card.
10) Do the skins also support the small one-line "minimized" version? If not, I think they should.

One thing that no MP3 player has at the moment is an optimised layout for in-car use. I use my ppc mounted on the dash, and with a 512Mb memcard you can fit a lot of music on there! The only problem is trying to find a particular track while on the move - rather distracting and potentially dangerous as you can imagine!
An in-car layout would have large finger-friendly buttons, be full screen to maximise screen real-estate, and have a variety of info layouts. The most essential would be a large, easy-to-read playlist, then you could have one with more detailed track information - you'd have to be able to switch between layouts easily of course!
The killer addition to this would be if you could record voice tags to launch particular songs, so just press a button and say the name of the song/playlist you want to hear! You could also have tags for simple controls e.g. forward, back, volume up/down, etc. Now that would be really cool :)

1) Has to be OGG support - but also in a way that you can use with EQ (most ogg players don't support EQ)
2) Gapless transition between tracks - vital when playing those continous mix albums. Crossfader would also be vital.
3) Sort options for the playlist (orders by album/track number and gendre/album, gendre/artist). Of course this would also require OGG tag support ;) Also have an enque option for the playlist so that you can browse your PPC and add additonal music to the current playlist.
4) Button lock mode: something i currently miss with any player, the ability to lock all buttons/screen so that i don't accidentally knock anything and interupt playback when the PPC is in my coat pocket. To disable button lock you could have a custom button press combination, or touch two areas of the screen (like you have with the nokia mobile phones)
Will add some more if i think of any (still early in the morning here ATM!)

I listen to a lot of spoken word and the files are often more than 30 minutes long. Sometimes I leave a file part-way through and want to navigate to the right place later, and PocketMusic isn't very good at this - especially as many of the alternative programs can move to a different place in a long track instantly, where PocketMusic can take a long time to get to the right place in the file.
So, ways to improve the program (either base or add-on features) for use with long tracks:
Improve the time it takes to move to a different point in a file
The ability to show the time elapsed and/or remaining from the current track, and from the total playlist
A Go To Time (elapsed or remaining) function - being able to type in the time to go to; showing the time being selected when the slider is used
The ability to set the time to go to in a file, even when play mode is stopped
The ability to set, delete and go to bookmarks within a track
For music, I'd like to see:
The shuffle mode altered so that a list is generated of the order the tracks will be played in, allowing the user to skip forward and backwards within the list (and to re-shuffle if the user doesn't like the order suggested).
It would be nice to enhance this by setting the number of times that individual tracks would be played, so that a favourite track might be played three or four times within the shuffle (this could be saved within playlists).

I was going to add the ability to move tracks up and down within the list, but I've just discovered how to do this while playing, so can I add something very important: better documentation!

Here is my list of recommendations:
1) Support for DSPs like the popular DFX (www.fxsound.com).
2) Visualizations like in WMP and Winamp.
3) Full screen mode (hidding the top bar)
4) Support for more formats: WMA, Ogg, MP3 Pro

1- I agree with the ogg support comments.
2- since all Pocket PCs have microphones, maybe a configurable option to turn the volume down when noise is heard (for example- you're listening on headphones and someone comes up and starts talking to you and the volume automatically turns down)
3- an "always on top" option for the windowshade mode (if that's even possible on a PPC) so you could use other programs but still have the player visible
4- along with the "always on top" functionality, the ability to change the position of the bar on the screen (or maybe make some kind of button for the task bar that would show/hide the player)
5- this may be a lot to ask but faster seek times when moving the position slider would be nice (it would be great if it could be as fast as skipping tracks is), but if nothing else, at least show the new time or even an approximation as the slider is moved instead of waiting until playback resumes
6- add an option to have the screen automatically turn off after a user configurable period of time
7- it's been mentioned already, but gapless playback would be very nice
8- full screen visualizations might be fun
9- remote control support- for example: you have your PPC across the room/car/wherever, hooked up to some speakers and want to control it without getting up. you wouldn't even need a universal remote because you could just program the PPC to use any remote control
10- I also like the idea of a car/dedicated mode. you could have the display turn sideways, have large scrolling track information, have on screen buttons and alternate hardware mappings, etc.
11- I can't tell if you have it already or not, but hardware mappings for searching within a song would be nice (ie- press and release to skip 10 seconds, press and hold to fast forward)
12- audible battery level notification (between tracks and only at certain levels, say when battery reaches %50, %25, %10...)
13- ability to insert "now listening to: Artist / Song" text into e-mail/other text

This might seem too simple, but:
Since reviewing the battery life stats on my IPAQ 3660, I keep sounds turned off in general. This gives a very substantial benefit in prolonging charge life, and I have never really used, or become dependent on, system souns and such. When I want to use the sound system, I just activate it through WISBAR. It would be nice, for folks like me, if the MP3 player would take on the system settings when it starts running, to turn on sound, and then kill the system sound "on" setting when it closes.

Repeats from earlier statements that I think would be great (and so I'm repeating :D ) :
1- Shuffled lists with some kind of memory so they don't repeat
2- Bigger buttons for us driving users
3- Crossfade between songs so they switch smoother
New ideas:
1- Volume control linked to hardware buttons, if there was some way to fine tune it I would love that. For example if I have it set on the lowest volume setting it still is too loud.
2- Landscape mode!! (This could be the solution to the PocketMusic for drivers)
Well, those are all my bright ideas for now. Thanks for such a great music player its great I use it ALL the time and I'm overjoyed that you are continuing perfecting it.

Great product already. It is my goto app for mp3's. Good work all around.
Improvements:
1. Larger buttons ( I use it in the car too!)
2. Bookmarks for us audiobook junkies. Or at least faster fast forward.
3. A short burst forward and rewind. A "what did he just say?" button if you will for when you only want to jog back a few seconds.
4.Bigger button option. I usually don't need the EQ and my playlist tends to be static for large periods of time so I would gladly give up some of that real estate for larger player buttons.
5. This one may be just me but I have mapped button 1 and button 4 to play/pause and screen off respectively. ( you have no idea how cool screen off is) but now my Home button doesn't work while using the player. I would like to keep unmapped buttons avaliable. Did that make sense?
6.Better memory of where files are stored. I ( like most I imagine ) keep all my mp3's in the same folder. When I go to add new files it would be nice if it would open the last used folder instead of having to dig down through the levels of my file system to where I have my music stored.
Overall the free player is about 90% there, just a few tweaks would set it further out in front. Can't wait to see what you guys come up with. Thanks for asking us users what we think and what we would like to see in future releases.

1.WMA Support
Small size, good quality, nuff said.
2.Track Crossfading
Cool to hear & enjoy
3.Midi Support
Is there even a midi player for PPC right now?
4.Visualization
Cool graphics playing around while listening to the songs
It can be funny, serious, or the usual techno ones
5.Improvements on the equalizer!
The current one isn't something anyone can be
too proud of

WMA support is top on my list. I ripped my collection to wma some time ago, and it's a shame no 3rd party PPC players support it.

Just a quick FYI - A few people have commented on wanting faster seeking. I've found that if you crank up the buffer a bit (I use 5 MB), PocketMusic is able to load the entire song into memory (after a few seconds time), and then it can seek quickly. For me this also solves the problem where I turn the PPC off and back on again, and the player can't find the music because the storage card hasn't quite come "on line" yet. With the buffer enabled the playing can begin immediately when the unit is turned back on.

1. I would like to see an adjustable skip feature, i.e. you could hit the button and it would skip forward 3 minutes (or whatever length of time you set.) This would be handy if your trying to skim through large audio files looking for specific content, i.e. speeches, etc.
2. WMA and RA Support (add support for streaming as well). It would be nice to have one player take care of all of these files.
3. Ability to convert files on the Pocket PC (I went back to add this and saw someone else had thought of the same idea.)
4. As long as we're dreaming, how about a today screen plug-in, basically the minimized view, which would allow you to control the basic music functions, so you could play your music withOUT loading up the full app.

1 - WMA Support
2 - WMP 9 (desktop) visualation support. Then you can take the visualations from your desktop and put them on your ppc
3 - Display Time remaing in song, time remaining in playlist
4 - WMP 9-like playlist support. I love the que-it-up feature in WMP9
5 - Small applet like Sidex that runs when in another application while listening to music. It would control basic configurations like volume, stop, play, skip, and more advanced configurations like fast-foward and rewind, and battery meter
6 - Video support. I know this is a music player but I would love something that could entirely replace media player. I would like to support MPEG, AVI/DIVX, and WMV
7 - MIDI support, OGG support
8 - On board converter(I would love this). Convert mp3 to wma to ogg at a selected bitrate. Batch conversion would be nice.
9 - Speed Controlled Volume - great feature on the Corvette. When in a quiet environment, the volume goes down. When in a loud environment, the volume goes up. Use the onboard mic to detect decibel levels.
10 - Recording as mp3/wma
11 - This is a little overboard, but record over mp3s and multilayered recording.
12 - Internet Radio guide, like WMP9
13 - Voice Operated Controls or iPaq expansion pack users. I have having to open up the expansion pack to use the hardware buttons.
14 - If the above is too hard, use the record button for controls. Hit it once for play/pause, hit it twice for stop, press and hold for screen off/on, etc.
15 - Small size. With all the above features, this player could be big. Keep it under 3mb.
16 - This is the craziest of them all :) . For Wifi enabled ppcs with large storage cards, add Kazza support. Be able to tab between the Kazaa network and the player. It would be nice to listen and download at the same time. Then, using a batch converter(suggestion 8) you could optimize the songs for ppc.
Thats all I can think of for now.

I just want a LANDSCAPE mode since I use one of my PDAs as a rearview camera for my car so I want to have everything in there. So far no music player can do the landscape mode nicely.

Like many others, I'd like to see OGG support--this is the main reason I don't use you're player yet! Here are my main two suggestions though:
1 - Mod file support! Like midi, but better. I've got quite a few mod files that I like to play with the PocketPC player CyberMod, but I can't mix them in with my MP3/OGG playlists. Winamp has support for .mod files, so I can do this on my PC. There are also files that are in the same group as .mod files that CyberMod supports: .s3m, .xm, .it. It's pretty cool to have 160 minutes of music in 20mb!
2 - An "Add Files" button. This would let you highlight all the files you wanted by clicking to select (like holding <crtl> in Windows), and then have an "OK" button when you're done. Sometimes I want to add multiple files to a playlist, but not all the files in a folder. Selecting files in this way is always hard on a PPC.
Good luck! I hope to see some of these features in the future!

all the good ones have been taken but:
built in video support: ala winamp3
it has to be modifiable: ala winamp3
All music type support, if not ... have a built in encoder so that if can do everything on the road from a CF or SD card!
if the ppc is "connected" have the program look up album and artis info, that would be a nice feature
sorry i didnt notice this earlier .. i would have put some of the mentioned ideas: wifi streaming and others
What I would like:
I'd like to have it connect, when docked, to the winamp playing on my desktop, displaying the song currently played, and perhaps with visualization. Then I'd see that even when the screen is turned off (on my desktop)

It doesn't need to even have Landscape support, just a skin that covers the whole screen and buttons that are flipped. I think that would be much much easier to do then actually converting the program over. Although it's easy to just create new skins, I think it would be really awesome if you had a set way of how the buttons are mapped so it would be a really really great Mp3 Player (Think Ipod)! Ogg support and many other formats would be great, but first things first with having a completely revolutionary layout. Thanks again for a great (mostly) free product!

Since we're on the topic of Landscape, I wouldn't hesitate for a sec to purchase this software if you fine folks could port it over to the Handheld PC 2000 operating system (specifically ARM and MIPS processors). I've been able to get this player to work with my Intermec 6651 (MIPS HPC2000) by putting certain files in the same directory as the program. It works but takes up the entire screen and has some problems with the playlist screen.
For now, I've been using GSPlayer (which does streaming and is generally a good player) but I am in love with the interface of the player.
so, suggestions..
1) HPC 2000 port (MIPS and ARM)
2) Ability to navigate to network drive by allowing
\\<pc name\<mp3 directory> access
3) Turn screen off functionality if possible (hey, I can dream can't I)
4) Streaming Audio Favorites list
5) Opacity capability (so one can see through the player when it's sitting on the corner of an HPC screen
*prays for HPC port*

At least one person has commented on a related point, but I would like to see the software remember where it was within a track when playback is stopped (by whatever means). This would be useful for listening to audio books in MP3 format. A comparison is the software from www.audible.com used to play back their own format audio books. (I wouldn't want to wait such a long time for the software to load like the audible.com software though).

Another vote for gapless playback!! I listen to DJ-mixed trance CDs exclusively, which are completely seamless and uninterrupted moving from song to song. I can't deal with a player that inserts a gap between tracks - just destroys the flow.

OK, dumb question... Installed this on my SD card, found the folder but couldn't seem to find anything in it? The remove programs application says that it was installed, but cannot find it with the explorer or in the Programs file. Which file / executable do I use to launch the program? Also, I cannot double click my mp3 files anymore to get them to launch , whats up?

Forgive me - but I didn't read any of the posts for this piece of software. Although, I did give it the software a try while looking for a MP3 player to play files over a WiFi connection. Here are my thoughts about PocketMind:
My first suggestion to these people would be that they would reply to their emails. I will not support a company that will not support it's users. A great piece of software with enormous potential - but failure to reply gave me a weird feeling that if problems arise later on - I'm stuck and on my own.
The flaw - playing MP3's over a WiFi... Slow, jitters and sloppy interface.
Sorry PocketMind...My pick goes to "WithMp3"

The Ipaq 5450 has three LEDs (four if you count the power LED on the other side). The WiFi indicator is green or orange, the Bluetooth one is blue, and there is a third that doesn't seem to ever light, maybe this is for a GPRS connection should a GPRS radio be made available.
Anyway, would be great if the music player could use these LEDs in some way. Perhaps a smooth scrolling ALA Knight Rider would be neat! Not sure if these LEDs are software-accessible though.

One of the biggest problems with most players is playlist management. How about an explorer type interface that finds all the playable files regardless of type with a drag and drop into a playlist?
The screen would be split top/bottom or left/right with 'found' files on the top/left. A dropdown on the bottom/right would allow you to select a playlist to edit or 'new' for an empty playlist. You then drag and drop form the top/left into the editable playlist.
There could also be arrows for song order. Then a play button to play directly from there.

**** PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ****
Add support to turn off the damn hardward buttons. I tried to use my iPaq 1910 to play MP3s when I work out but I keep a button or something and I keep losing the song I was playing.
While you are at it, add a mode to ignore the screen taps to except for maybe a small are of the screen to switch modes.
Thanks.

Good timing - over the weekend, before I read this, I was using PocketMusic to listen to some audiobooks in the car and had several thoughts. My suggestions, in rough priority order:
1) Audible support. I'm not sure what it takes from a licensing perpective to support the Audible file format, but it'd be great to be able to play downloads from Audible.com directly within PocketMusic. AudiblePlayer for the Pocket PC is quite frustrating, and it'd be great to use the same application for listening to audio programs and music.
2) Sticky positioning. When listening to audiobooks, individual tracks are often 30-60 minutes or more, which makes it likely that you'll be in the middle of a track when it's time to stop. It'd be great to have an option for PocketMusic to remember the current track and position when shutting down. Even better, it'd be nice to be able to remember the current position for multiple files (i.e. when listening to more than one title).
3) Jump to time. As another poster noted, it's difficult to reposition the playback within a file. The only real option seems to be dragging the slider to the position you want; however, there's a long delay when doing this, and there's no feedback while you're dragging, so it ends up being a trial-and-error affair. It'd be nice to a) provide a pop-up box to directly enter a time to jump to, b) provide time feedback as you drag the position slider, and c) make repositioning much faster,
4) Car mode. It'd be handy to have a very simple UI mode that you could enable for use in the car. This mode would be fairly minimal (i.e. track name, current time/total, play/pause, fwd/rev, volume), and feature large buttons that would be very easy to hit with your finger.
5) Bookmarks. Along the same lines as #2, it'd be nice to be able to define bookmarks and jump to them.
6) Documentation. Don't need much here, but it'd be nice to have some basic documentation that outlines the features and how to use them. It'd also be nice to have a screen shot that describes the function of each of the widgets.
Seems like this combination of things done well, perhaps with the enhanced key mapping, would make a reasonable "audiobook feature pack."

1. Add WMA compatibility (those of us who use the free Windows MEdia Player on the desktop can only create WMA's.
2. Ogg support.
3. Large buttons for driving control.

Nothing that hasn't been said already, but, my top ten would be:
1. Ogg Support
2. Streaming/Live365 support without having to rebuffer every 5 minutes.
Yup, that's all ten.

1) OGG Support
2) WMA Support
3) Auto add new files to playlist - 'auto playlist'?
4) Good EQ w/ several presets
5) Minimize to bar, selectable always on top
That's the most important for now.....

In addition to crossfading, how about fade in / fade out, so that when I start or stop the player I get a fade effect.
And add another vote for a "back 10 seconds" function (something which could be assigned to a hardware button).

Not here. I was concerned that they may have sent the e-mail while my account was down...it's sometime unreliable. Good to know I'm not the only one.

wow 8O I got an email today as well. God I'd love to use this software, too bad it doesn't work with my H/PC :(. Great work though on all the new features.

I bought pocketmusic, but I can't get the featurepak playlist editor to work with my Toshiba 5GB datapak (Ipaq and PC Card sleeve). Is there anyone with this configuration that has gotten it to work? I have about 800 mp3's. I have tried CEPlaylist and it works fine.
Pocketmind support suggested I have too many MP3's, but the playlist sounds like it never even starts trying to read the files from the drive, the hourglass just spins around.
Any help?
Mike
