Since we have that "interesting" post on the front page, here's a simple little poll: who remembers Wednesday, December 31, 1969...

I wasn't born yet. The date doesn't ring a bell. What happened on that day.

I don't remember, but '69 was an eventful year.

I was not even 2 at the time, but I know what that date was. Al Gore invented the internet on that day!

Hmmm... 1969 was the year my parents got married. I suspect I then was but a glint in my father's eye ...

I was a little over 2. I don't know what I was doing, I just know it will have been something to annoy someone. :)

Well, 9 months later I came along, so I'm sure my parents probably remember it as the beginning of the end :D

GEEZ, I feel old! I was OVER 3 on that date.

I think that is the day that Nixon started to pull forces out of Vietnam.

Hmm... Dec. 31 1969. Seeing as how that was only 17 years before I was born, I remember it well. It was the day that... oh who am I kidding? I don't have a clue what happened that day. :) Should I?

Well, 1969 was the year we first put a man on the moon. Not sure some of the posters even know we did that. I was in High School, and I remember staying up to see the first steps.

The end of the year though, was just the end of another year in the life of a teenage geek, and that was before geeks were revered as they are today

Well, it was New Years Eve, and the end of a heck of a decade. I was 7 at the time...

I guess that makes me the "old man" here... Ooops, I guess Sven takes that title...

I thought that day rang a bell (even though I wasn't born yet). Every day I thank God for Al Gore and his super huge brain that came up with the internet!

Was 7. It was also the every first time I was allowed stay up to 12:00 for new years. I remember this because I remember asking someone if I could try their cigar. I was green if the face for sometime

Wally World? I think I see Rusty in the background!

Okay, three wrong means no more guesses, as to allow more would be too much in the way of thread hijacking. But hey, I'm guessing Wally World might be a tongue-in-cheek correct guess, so the booby prize goes to bdegroodt! It was Disneyland, and this was a merry-go-'round near the hotel. It was about 11:30, and my step-mom was being a royal pain about getting us into bed... she managed to take the fun out of just about everything. Still, it was Disneyland, and I was on reality vacation. My dad, it turned out later, had kinda broke the bank to get us there. Trying too hard, when bills were piled to the ceiling. You'd never know to see him then though, as he was always a big kid when he took us places.
The noise was unbelievable that New Years, and the fireworks were pretty cool. Lineups though, ouch! All we got to do was this horsey thing, the monorail, and Pirates of the Carribean. That last was my favourite on each of the three times I went to Disneyland over about 10 years. Especially loved the elevator at the beginning, with the ceiling crushing down on us.

Funny how we don't realize what our parents had to go through to give us our lives until we're out on our own and trying to figure life out huh?

I know what you mean, but 'funny' wouldn't be my first choice to describe it. My parents both did things I am amazed at today, things that boggle my mind, out of love for their kids. What stinks the most is that they are both dead, and though I had lots of good time with my mom, my dad fell on his fool head before I really had a shot at getting through to him how much he meant to me. I missed opportunities, and he blocked them, and together we managed to prevent any sort of mature relationship and understanding. I try not to make such mistakes too much with the kid in my keeping now. My brothers are both dads now, and they seem to be learning well how it goes. Got to stay open, that's the main thing.

12/31/69 was actually quite memorable. I spent 12/31/69 in a hotel in Valencia, Venezuela (not near the metropolis it is today, I'm sure) celebrating New Year's Eve. The next day we moved to B.A. I was 10 years old at the time and filled with some anxiety about leaving old friends to make new ones. And of course, we wore jackets and ties for the parties in those days! I do not remeber it being a Wednesday, however.

Cheers

Yes. Maybe funny is a poor choice on a emotionless board, but I do mean ironic.

I think your experiences are common for men and their fathers of generations gone by. I certainly can relate. Good to see you've picked up and are forging a different, dare I say, better way of connecting with child.

December 31, 1969...Apollo 12 astronauts had been back on earth for one month. Apollo 12 was the second mission to land on the moon. Pete Conrad and Al Bean were the third and fourth men to walk on the moon, Dick Gordon stayed in orbit in the Command Module. 0X

I love Merida. I know it's changed a lot since the 60's, (I was there again for 6 months in 1988), but nothing can take away from the breathtaking presence of Pico Bolivar!
