i am bent between the four and don't know if i should spend the little bit more for the 3970 or go with the 3950. is it true that the 3955 and 3975 are just cheaper because they are not bluetooth enabled?

I have recently stressed myself out over the same decision. The 3950/55 and the 3970/75 are almost identical other than the bluetooth. The 3970 and 3975 have 48 MB of ROM (which gives you more space in your iPAQ File Store). That is the only difference.
I opted to save myself the better part of a hundred bones by going with the 3955 and have been very happy! You can buy a heck of a SD card (which I would have anyway) for the $75 or so price difference. :)

As I understand, the 3950 and 3955 are identical. the 3970 and 3975 are identical too. The ROM on the 3970/75 is 48mb instead of 32. And the 3970/75 have bluetooth.
I haven't heard great things about bluetooth, so i opted for the 3955 and am waiting for the wi-fi SD card. If I had to choose again, it would be between the 3955 and the new 5400 series.

I would go with the 3970/3975 with the built in bluetooth, and extra memory. If you upgrade the bluetooth software to the 545X version you have a very nice unit. Add extra memory from PPCTECH. and in many ways you have a better unit.

There's a patch to upgrade the bluetooth software on the 3970/3975 to the same one found in the 5450?

3700, 3800 and 3900 series models ending with a "0" are purchased directly from HP/Compaq. Models ending with "5" are purchased thru retail outlets such as BestBuy and CompUSA.

I agree 100%. I had my 3975s RAM upgraded to 128MB by PPCTECHS and love it. :D Never had a problem with the Bluetooth; it has worked flawlessly for me.
But I am also curious. Is there an upgrade for the Bluetooth software that makes it like that of the 545X?
