Is it possible to use one's PPC as a remote for your stereo/TV, etc?

Here's an example of a program that does that.
http://handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=1&jid=D5B4355BECXD47533B695874D36EX5B9&productId=51041&optionId=1_2_2&productType=2&catalog=30&txtSearch=remote+control&sectionId=0&platformId=2.

There are lots of programs taht can do that. Look arround Handango or Pocket Gear and you'll find lots. Also, if you have either an iPAQ 3900 or 5400, you aldready have a program that does that: Nevo.

Besides the VITO Remote program, check out UltraMote (http://www.ultramote.com) and Total Remote (http://www.griffintechnology.com/griffinmobile/totalremote/index.html), both of which include hardware to boost the IR of Pocket PCs.

P.S. Please don't post long links "naked". The board software doesn't wrap them, and it resets the margins for the whole page, forcing horizontal scrolling. Use the URL tags, like this:

[url=http://handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=1&jid=D5B4355BECXD47533B695874D36EX5B9&productId=51041&optionId=1_2_2&productType=2&catalog=30&txtSearch=remote+control&sectionId=0&platformId=2]
VITO Remote
[/url]

The above looks like the following when posted:

VITO Remote

See how much nicer that is? :-)

Nevo works great, but I don't know if you can buy it separately. It comes on the iPaq 3900 and 5400 series, I think.

any of this stuff freeware?

Did you check the links and see? None of the items linked are freeware; certainly the remotes with hardware assists won't be.

Nevo is freeware in the sense it comes loaded on iPAQ 3900s and 5400s.

What Pocket PC do you have?

Axim X5 Performance

I've heard that the Axim's IR signal is too weak to really be useful as a remote anyway.

I made this skin for Ultramote (http://ultramote.com)
http://mysite.verizon.net/res02afy/dtvmote.jpg
and use it with my iPAQ 3765 w/ the remote extender CF card. By itself the 3765 has a weak IR signal like 8 or 9 feet maybe. With the card its like 50 or more feet. It works great. The software lets you record IR commands from other remotes you have, but it does not have a list of included remote commands by brand. You can download it (http://www.ultramote.com/um/UMSetup-v1_9-XScale.exe) (it works for Axim, I checked) and try it out for like 30 days with full features. It lets you make macros also. Nasty photoshop hackjob... so sue me.

My iPAQ 3955 came equipped with Nevo... Ultramote does not work with the IR in the 3900's from what I understand. But that's okay because it DOES include a list of remote by brand so you can just pick and choose and it makes up the buttons for you. It can also record other IR remotes and you can set up Favorites buttons that can be macros.

I get a lot of mileage out of both.

Its funny changing the channels on the TV at the bar or the hospital waiting room or on the big screen TVs at Best Buy.
