I convert mpg file to WMV using WMEncoder 9. The video plays well on my desktop but produce no sound on my Dell Axim. My older files (produced be encoder 7) work fine. Any ideas?
Thx! :-(

When you created the video, did you use the save as PocketPC format?

Hi there, Windows Media Encoder by default encode the audio in 48 kHz. Pocket PC still cannot play 48 kHz sound format.
At the wizard, make sure u uncheck the "Begin converting when I click Finish". After that, click the "Properties" button. Go to the "Compression" tab, click "Edit" button. Click the second tab, mine is "256". Change the audio format to any 44 kHz ones.
For me I choose "64 kbps, 44 kHz, stereo CBR".

does the same rule apply if the headphone socket is being used?

Yup...should be....Pocket Pc still cannot decode 48 kHz sample. Dunno why microsoft put it as default in the first place. Maybe supported in later version of WMP for PPC 2003? hahahaha.

I just use Windows Media Encoder 7.1 instead. It works great for the Pocket PC.

Many thanks to Xenohawk for the tip of Encoder 9 & vaudio settings, it works great. The quality with encoder 9 is much better than encoder 7.

i've always wandered why i couldn't get the audio to work, thanks the for the help. But just a quick question if you don't mind sharing, what are the video settings that you use because I haven't touched the video settings, and even with the 400mhz axim i find it to be very choppy. The best results i've gotten so far with dvd's on my ppc are by using windows movie maker.

Actually I just switched to Dell Axim from (Casio E-125). WMEncoder 9 works so great that I tossed PocketTV (Mpg player) and PocketDivx (PocketMVP). Divx, VirtualDub,....And start using WMV format.
When you convert the file using WMEncoder 9 just select for PocketPC and make the Audio chage as above described. Voila...I found the quality is excellent with the modest size....and trouble free.

I use WMM2 for editing home videos with fancy video transitions and fancy video effects (I wish it could save as MPG for VCD, Microsoift only outputs in WMV or AVI).
For small videos that you put in the PocketPC (such kids home video, music videos, etc.) WMEncoder 9 works great and very simple to use, I use option PocketPC and not worry about frame rate, size,....WMEncoder 9 uses 2 passes encoding automatically very impressive result on my Dell Axim. ;-)
