Does anyone know if the MS Reader leak problem will be resolved in PPC2003? Also why was reader not fixed with EUU3? I had never noticed this problem before but when I was reading my free copy of Pocket PC Mag (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=97122&PHPSESSID=a63c9510c8b2ebfb606823882ff153df) I found that I was running out of RAM very quickly.

Almost nothing is known about Pocket PC 2003 at this time, so it's too early to say if the bug has been fixed.

Wow...DITTO! I thought there was something dramatically wrong with my new handheld! I couldn't believe the problems that one .lit file created. Glad to know that I am not alone!

You were lucky. In my Jornada it offered to turn safe store memory into program memory to compensate the memory leak but then it crashed and half the memory of the safe store was lost forever (I suppose it's hidden somewhere)

Yeah, I just discovered it recently as I was considering that Pocket PC Mag subscription as well. The PPC Mag website tips you off ahead of time regarding the Reader issue (the issue only applies tothe PPC Reader - the desktop reader works fine). I'm surprised MS hasn't provided a fix for this already.

Is it true that the leak only occurs in LIT files with graphics?

In simple terms, all applications use a portion of memory to operate. In this case, MS Reader will use portions of your PPC memory where it will load your eReader book. Now for large eReader books, it can't load the entire book, so it only loads a certain portion of it (it might be a page or 5 pages or 10). As you read through a book, the reader program is supposed to "release" memory containing the pages you just read and the "reserve" memory for loading the pages you're about to read (I'm assuming it's using dynamic memory allocation as opposed to static, but that's another discussion).

In our case, it appears that the PPC MS Reader program doesn't "release" memory correctly (if memory is not released, other programs including MS Reader can't use it). Thus, as it continues to reserve additional memory for the following pages, it eventually runs out of memory causing your machine to lock up or the program to crash or something of that nature. I hear that exiting out of MS Reader and restarting it fixes the problem so it appears that ALL the memory is effectively released once you exit.

Hope that helps.

Not sure, but the only time I have ever had a problem with MSReader on my PPC is with the free copy of Pocket PC Mag (link in a post above). And that .LIT file is loaded with graphics. <shrug> :|

Cheers.

I used to have a problem with MS Reader on the Toshiba e310, but ever since I exchanged it for the e335 I haven't had the problem.

I've even left MS Reader open...with a book open...for a full day with no issues whatsover.

Well, from what I understand, the issue is tied to ebooks with specific characteristics and the memory leak is only an issue after flipping through several pages of specific types of ebooks.
