Sounds like anyone holding out for the new(updated?) OS should rethink their purchase plans. Going to let hardware dictate my next purchase. The new line of Intel processors coupled with a 200mhz bus sounds awfully good to me :D

Can I ask what you're basing this decision on? If it's the Brighthand article, well, don't believe everything you read online...

To be honest from Jasons post I guess we should now suspect that what we read in the Brighthand article underestimates what the MVP's were told/shown regarding the next PPC OS. Which is great news!!
On the other hand let’s take a step back and really look at the facts.
All of this info comes in one way or another from Microsoft.
Microsoft has a history of promising features in the next versions of their OS's that are later scaled back or completely removed. Even when those features were present in a Beta version of the software. Especially when they are more focused not on the next release or upgrade, but rather on the following release/upgrade.
This seems to especially true when it comes to anything .NET.
So could it be possible that many of the enhancements M$ had originally envisioned in the next PPC OS have been pulled until they go to the .net upgrade?
Maybe what Jason and the rest of the MVP's learned is that a outstanding PPC OS is on the way with many of the features/enhancements that we have been craving for!!! But then again maybe not....
Only time will tell..................................

On the countrary my dear Watson.... at about 5-6 years of age I did visit my dad in siberia who was serving there for a brief period of time before the collapse of the Soviet Union. And I've been to Toronto so I guess that counts as Canada.
Anyway..... dont judge a book by its cover!

Sorry, in my 25 years living in Toronto, I never suffered. The implication wasn't that either place was pleasant. I also would take offense at the comment "maybe we'll use canada for that" .. but that's a different story - and both are off-topic.

I might agree with that if you're talking about a desktop OS, but can you give me examples of how this would apply to the Pocket PC OS? To my knowledge, the Pocket PC team has always been very tight lipped about features until it's going to be released, and I've never known them to make idle promises about features that later change. The possible exception to that would be something like the DRM5 Reader app for Pocket PC 2000 that was later scrapped, but that was more about the Reader team anyway...

I'm kind of curious. It seems a given that the next PPC OS will be based on CE.NET (blatantly stated by at least one MDC attendee, and (*ahem*) strongly hinted by other MVPs - so - was someone taking Ed at BH for a ride? Or is there a deep dark secret we should be worrying about...! 8O

If they just fix Connection Manager and ActiveSync, I'll be happy. :)

Jason,
Like I said my comments were directed at MS as a whole and not necessarily at any past broken promises relating directly to the PPC OS.
I have no doubt that you guys are privy to what’s coming down the pipe, all I am saying is MS is famous for changing "strategies" which inevitability affect product lines, on a drop of a dime which may account for the conflicting information that the MVP's received and wherever Brighthand has gotten theirs.
Trust me my hope is that the PPC 2003 adds a whole package of new functionality that most of us have been asking for. I only question the possibility that it won't, or at least it being scaled back, not due to the history of the PPC (which is relatively short) but rather MS's release info in general.
And above all I hope my Axim can be flashed to the next version of the OS of course!!!! :D

Is it still likley to come out in april???? I don't know how much longer I can wait

Well, I'm neither professional nor particularly informed, but considering that April is in 5 days and we still haven't heard anything significant about it, my guess would be no. I'd expect it sometime this summer maybe? You'd think they'd have to have an official announcement at least a few weeks before it actually comes out....

Yeah I'm going to hold out because I want the new (2200) Ipaq. I have a 3955 and a 3835. The 3955 is so much better. Hopefully, the 2200 will be far superior to the 5400. :?

Well, when companies generally do not release new products exactly on the first day of the month. They tend to do it in the middle or near the end of the month. Or at least that's what it seems like to me! I hope it comes out soon because I don't know how much longer I can wait too!
By the way, if you check out that Brighthand discussion again, there's a user called petvas that has posted some very interesting replies about PPC 2003.

Do you disagree that the next OS will be more in the "Bug Fix/Add back features" category rather then a new OS ?

My 0.02$: Microsft has this tenedency to make Operating Sustems that fix some stuff and add a cpuple of new features. Even XP works the same. I am not sure about Longhorn. There was a rumor that Microsoft started from scratch on this one but I personally doubt it.
On Windows CE, the biggest thing Microsoft ever did on this deparment was coming up with Pocket PC 2000. After that came some pretty large contributions but the OS remained unchanged. So I would go to the far decision to say that the OS might not be a big eye openener. The only thing that truly surprises me is that the OS has been kept so secret. Remenver that on 2002, pics of the OS were everywhere? What happened this time arround?

Due to the nature of the NDA we signed with Microsoft as MVPs we in general can't comment on anything that isn't officially announced by Microsoft, so don't expect answers to this kind of questions from Jason, Andy, Ed, Brad or me.

I wouldn't think so because the 2200 will have optional bluetooth, but the 5400 already has bluetooth and WiFi built in. In addition, the 5400 series has the iPAQ shape to it, meaning that all the past iPAQ accessories will fit the 5400. Not so with th 2200.

I know that and wasn't trying to get anyone to violate their NDA's. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

One reason could be that there just isn't much of anything new to see? I'm sure there will be some OS tweaks with regard to the xscale cpu's and [perhaps] some improvements on the built-in apps. Hopefully I'm wrong

Well there is this RAM memory 'thing' with Pocket PC 2002, where your app can only use 32 MB of virtual memory. Unfortunately, a whole bunch of Windows CE .dll's get loaded into your 32 MB of virtual memory when you run your app. So actually you can only use about 23 or 24 MB or so. This usually is not a huge problem, unless you are trying to run a huge application. Which of course I am. Anyway I am hoping that the OS will manage memory a little better in PPC 2003. Especially with people developing larger and larger enterprise applications for Pocket PC, I think this fix will be great.
