Finally I realised the trick to make WMP open files that contain non-latin characters in their filename. Before this my choice of device was extremely limited. Not anymore... unfortunately I just "upgraded" to the 3870 a few months ago. :(
Anyway, I must thank Daimaou for posting the reading Japanese on PPC thread (http://discussion.brighthand.com/showthread.php?s=af10932d3010d1b0a53e59a1b6d17474&threadid=74282) on Brighthand, gave me just the clue I needed to pull this off.
