Is this another of the several brands manufactured by Socket? If so, that's a fabulous deal. Personally I'm long on 802.11b cards though, I really want an 802.11g CF card. I suppose we'll be more likely to see one after the standard is final.

I saw this in the store the other day and almost bought it, but the fact that I had never heard of the company made me hesitate. Also I'm not going to even have my wireless network set up for a few more weeks so it was $70(before rebate) that could be better spent until then :) But is this company any good?

I just bought this card on sunday from BestBuy and I just sent out the rebate yesterday so i'll tell you how it goes. I't works pretty good but im having a problem with the Signal Strength because it wont go over 53.3% but im trying to get that resolved.

I have been using it in my Dell as well. Loaded the drivers off the CD, stuck in the card and away it went. ZERO problems!

I've been trying to connect my Axim to the wireless router at work. If I use this card in the adapter in my laptop (also a Dell), I get connected to the router just fine. But for some reason I think the router isn't recognizing the Axim through the card. Anyone had this problem, or know of any solutions?

Anyway, back to the issue at hand. Any ideas?

Does anybody know if there are MIPS drivers available? I checked AmbiCom and BestBuy's websites, but neither lists processor architectures.

Actually rcobourn, think about network bandwidth and the pocket pc a little. For a pocket pc, 11Mb is some sick bandwidth compaired to the amount of storage your probably have and the amount of stuff you're actually going to download. I think b is fine for handhelds for now. I have a 1GB cf card but I don't think I'd have any reason for anything faster than an 11Mb connection. Proportionally to your pc 11Mb for the storage you have on your pocket pc is probably much faster than any bandwidth you might have on your desktop in relation to the storage you have on your desktop. And actually, I'd be surprised if the pocket pc could even stream data to storage that fast...I'm not sure but it wouldn't surprise me if there would be bottle necks there.

Tom, I second your question. I've got an e125 - does it work on mips?!?!?

Tom, check this out:

Compatible with Windows CE 2.1 and 3.0 in various pocket PCs and PDAs, and other portable devices with a Type I or Type II CompactFlash slot (engineered for compatibility with the Compaq iPAQ and Casio Cassiopeia)

All Cassiopeia's were mips! Sounds mips safe to me!

I agree the additional bandwidth isn't too important, but I do think it could come in handy when streaming video. What really concerns me is that the 802.11g devices (at least the Linksys ones I've used so far) seem to slow down substatially when run in mixed mode (even for g to g connections). I want to run the AP in g only mode to get full speed from other connected devices.

My PPC (E-125 and Axim) can barely handle a wired 10mbs traffic through a CF wired NIC card. Granted, I do not know the thoroughput of a wired connection and wireless connection is rarely at full 11mbs all the time (have an iBook with linksys 802.11b router).

Point is: PPC and 802.11b should suit each other fine at the typical transmission rate of 1-5 mbs, IMO.

I do not know very much about wireless LANs so I was wondering this. If I buy two of these cards and stick them in my two Pocket PCs, will I be able to play Pocket Quake with someone else who is using my other Pocket PC, through TCP/IP? Or is it more involved than that?

I have a Ambicom CF modem and it works great. Only paid 50 for it when most were in the 70-90 dollar range and I like the flip out jack better then the wart like thing the Targus has. Now I need a cheap wired ethernet card for work.

Yeah agostumpy, that was one good deal...made me wish I hadn't paid $50 for it a month ago.

This card really works well. The software is ok (I have seen better). It is really a good card for under $50 and does its job well for the price. I had no problems setting it up with my iPAQ nor with my Axim. It seems to have a good range, and isn't horrible on the batties. I'll do a review of it once I have some free time.

BTW... TechMage, two PPC's can talk via WiFi either through a router/access point or if you don't have that, just switch them to Ad-Hoc mode and then they don't need the access point to talk.

I have two amibcom cards. work great on my two casio's - e200 and e125. One thing - they sometime require a reset so that the ppc will not try to access them as a storage card (i am using the cf card for both storage and communcations).

The card seems to works pretty well on my Ipaq 3955, except I HAD to give it the SSID of my access point. For some reason, the default ANY wasn't picking up my AP.

what kind of AP do you have? i have a LinkSys, and its Default is "any" so then the default of my CF card was also any, so it worked.... However i think everything still has to be set to Any, and its just kinda a "standard" that was adopted. but if you change the the SSID of you AP, then haveing "ANY" on your pocketpc is usless. i THINK ;)

Not to sidetrack things, but I noticed that BestBuy also carries a BlueTooth CF card from the same company. It's priced at $79 minus a $35 rebate. Has anyone had any experience with it?

... BlueTooth CF card from the same company. ... Has anyone had any experience with it?
Not to keep things sidetracked, but, yes, I have that one.

It works, but I don't think the drivers are very well developed. It would seem most of the attention was put on cell phone connections, with support for S/E T68i and some Nokia models. For connection to the PC, it only support FTP transfer and ActiveSync. And, doing ActiveSync, it hangs up on AvantGo (and recovering from an activesync hangup is no simple thing). So, in short, since I don't have a BT phone, it hasn't been very useful. At this point I wish I'd returned it as I almost did, but I was still hoping they'd rev the drivers another time or two.

Does anyone know if this offer is valid in Canada? Can I order from Bestbuy.com and ship to Canada and use the rebate?

Thanks!

to get your bluetooth working look for other manufactures drivers. many of the cards are made by the same oem's and drivers are easily interchangeable. might take a hard reset or two to get one to work ( have to clean out that registry) but may be worth it. It's sweet sitting in one room and pulling out the handheld and telling it to access the internet, then hearing your computer in the other room start to dial!

The Ambicom and Pretec cards are exactly the same card. Only difference is the Branding.

Check your settings on your AP to see if you have "ANY" enabled. Most newer AP and Firmware's are adding this option.

No Socket and Symbol are the same card. Ambicom and Pretec are the same card.

If you look closely at the "G" and "A" series WiFi PC cards they are all
"Cardbus" form factor. I don't think we'll see either of these in standard PC or CF form factor any time soon.

Great Card. I bought it to replace my piece of crap Linksys card that I had to return 2 times!

Bettery range and better software to connect.

I have a 3com AP, set to its default. I tried a couple of times with the Ambicom and it just did not work for autodetecting my AP. It could be the AP (hard to say considering the rest of my wireless devices are running XP in zero config mode), but I had to force it to the specific SSID. I also noticed that it seems to default to 2Mbit, so I did force it to 11.

I tested it with my laptop running XP and it worked fine. You will, however need to have a PCMCIA to CF adapter
