I have been reading the articles on this site for a while (actually every morning at work), and since I saw mentioned here that HP wasn't going to be putting out a combine phone/pda anytime soon, I took the plunge and bought Ipaq 5450 and set up a pc card cell phone. As a matter of fact I am writing this on the 5450 now.
It was easier to set up than I expected, everything worked with hardly a hitch.
For those interested, I live in Connecticut and bought a Sierra wireless aircard and am using Verizon as my provider (they offer a flat rate for unlimited access, $100/mo which I thought was high at first, until I figured I was spending $35/mo for the cell phone, $20/mo for a lqndline, and $20/mo for an ISP). Verizon's tech support people are very good (too bad their salepeople don't know what their doing).
