View Full Version : A quandry I should not be having:

What I have:

Dell Axim X5, Advanced
Ambicom BT2000 Bluetooth CF Card
Innopocket Aluminum Case (coming shortly, already paid for)
Ambicom 802.11b CF Card (coming shortly)
Dell Folding Keyboard (will probably order this week)

But my problem is that after going to CompUSA on Friday, I've developed a case of Ipaq 5450 lust that's even worse than it was before. I held it. I used it. I wanted it. Badly.

So do I trade in my Axim and sell the accessories, sell my E330, and sell my Maestro, put the extra money with it and get the 5450/5455? Or should I hold on to the Dell since I've pimped it out enough?

I don't want this to degenerate into a Dell v. Ipaq poll, I just want to know if my technolust is really valid or if I should be happy with what I have...

Frankly, that seems like a LOT of trouble for just one PDA. Besides, you should not fork out cash that much when a new 5600 series is coming out in say between now and next year.

I have been trying to tie myslef up and not buy a new PDA until the much rumored yet still not heard of "Pocket PC 2003" comes out. Then, I'll hope that my iPAQ is upgradable. If it is, I keep it. Otherwise, I go for the next best thing: an iPAQ **00 series.

So, just do what I am doing. Because I also touched an iPAQ 5400. Good thing that brain washing still works.

Besides, it looks as if you have way too much Dell stuff to just throw it all away and start from scratch with a great PDA but one that might be worth 400$ in September. Just wait.

Ok I'll bite, just what do you think you can do with the 545X that you can't with the Axim. I happen to have one of both. I can see good and bad points in each.

I like the amount of accessories, the fact that the wifi and bt are built in, and it's sleeker...

I don't know what exactly it is, frankly, I've just been wanting it since I saw it for the first time, and after playing with it a little, well, 8O

Well, my vote (coming from an ipaq 3850 user with many accessories including a socket wifi card who has recently developed a mean 5400 lust as well) is to keep your current pimped-out device, enjoy it for the next 6 months or so until the next generation comes out with PPC 2003 and a few of those prototype almost-dream-machines come to the market (hopefully the ipaq 56XX despite the nasty HP europe rumors that it's not coming!), then sell all your swag, maybe keep some if you save up, and get your dream machine. Was that a run-on sentence or what?
Always remember that by the time you've got what you think you want, the next greatest drool-toy is already out calling your name. Don't listen to it. Ignore the voices. They will eventually win, just make them work for it.

I personally know that if I get a 5400, i'll spend an additional $100 on a bluetooth headset, $350 on a bluetooth GPS, and $200 on a bluetooth phone, not to mention a whole new phone service and calling plan with data, and I'm sure I'll find more. Bottom line - I'm waiting as long as possible.

Good luck.

iPaqs, since day one, have had a very sleek "look". It doesn't appeal to everyone, and if you hold it sometimes the look gets in the way, but I do believe that's what jumpstarted Pocket PC 2000 way back when.

Having said all that, I'd say hold onto the Axim. Since the next generation of Pocket PCs may be around the corner, it's not really worth getting a 5450 now if you have an Axim.

If you still want to get a 5450, wait for the ROM update, IMHO.

I have an iPAQ 3970 and I love it, but I would say hold on to Your Dell.
With all of the acc. that you have you can do everything that you can with the 54xx iPAQ. Besides, I would be willing to bet that on most days you will still experience better battery life with your dell.
I will reiterate what has already been said here. Wait and see what the next generation has to offer (56xx iPAQ). I know that you are lusting the sleek styling of the ipaq, but Dell is expected to have something along the lines of the 5400 coming out soon, and I will bet that it will be considerably less expensive than the iPAQ.
Many of the new models coming out now, also have the 200 mhz bus on them. This should make the xscales much faster.

This is why I love you guys... Thanks for talking me down... That would've been an expensive leap

Not much of a problem for me, though... I have a T68i with a data plan
I have a bluetooth headset for my T68i
And I have no interest in a bluetooth gps... But don't worry, I get the point

$700 for a PDA? My desktop only cost $175 more then that! I think there are probably about 15 people in the entire world that the 5450 would NOT be a waste of money for ;)

Everyone knows the biggest waste in the universe is buying a Presidential palace in Baghdad... Jeez
