View Full Version : Sluggish Server

If you're wondering why the server is extra slow right now, and why the site wasn't loading about 30 minutes ago, it's because the server is getting hammered by a couple of external machines. From what we can tell, AvantGo is attempting to spider our entire site. That's tens of thousands of pages, and there's another user on a cable modem that's doing something similar. Our server team is attempting to block these IPs to restore server stability, but in the meantime things will be pretty slow. Thanks for your patience!<br /><br /><b>UPDATE:</b> It looks like it wasn't AvantGo after all, just a rogue cable modem user who was causing an amazing amount of chaos. The IP has been banned, and the site is back to being snappy.

Rats. I was trying to download the site to my Pocket PC! :worried:
Seriously, this could have been an error. Misconfigure a mobile favorite and this is what can happen.

Maybe it was a Palm user.

Nah. The amount of bandwidth a Palm can consume wouldn't have been noticed. :jester:

That reminds me: we need a tag! With all the ranting I've seen around here, it would do as well as the tags. 8)

The person responsible is hardly going to have caused such chaos deliberately and probably had no idea that he/she was going to cause such a problem.
We should give the person the benefit of the doubt so they feel able to send the PPCT team the necessary apologies (if they haven't already done so) for what was surely an error borne of ignorance.
