How do I get by firewall?!

Hey guys,
I'm a school residence and wanted to play some counter Strike online, or even use ICQ!! But my school is behind a firewall. How do I get around this ?? Some people say use tunnels, but i have no idea what that is or how to use it...any help on this one?
