Hi, I am just about to order an Axim X5 but I refuse to buy the memory at the prices Dell are charging. What sites can anyone recommend for cheap (yet good quality) CF / SD cards?

Thanks

Actually, Dell's prices are pretty damn good.

If you hit refresh a few times, look for the Simpletech banner - they have rebates on a lot of their cards.

You can also use the Pricegrabber search tool on the upper-right corner of our home page.

And, all else being equal, if you find that PriceGrabber brings up Buy.com, I've bought several memory cards from them lately and they always seem to actually have in stock what they say they do.

Check www.techbargains.com once in a while. Here's a good deal on CF right now:

SimpleTech 512MB CF from PC Connection (http://www.pcconnection.com/scripts/productdetail.asp?product_id=235501) for $129.95

$50 Rebate (http://www.pcconnection.com/images/rebates/simpletech_CFlash512_033103.pdf) (Expires 3/31/03)

Only $79 after rebate for 512MB...not a bad deal.

Here's another:

Viking 512MB CF from Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005MIS8/102-9955648-4927319) for $149.99

$50 Rebate (http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005MIS8.01.RB07.LZZZZZZZ.jpg) (Expires 3/31/03)

$100 after rebate

I like to buy from Amazon because they have free shipping, no tax (for where I am), and great customer service.

There are lots of CF modules and readers here... prices fluctuate, but I have seen some very excellent deals (on all types of memory) here> http://www.crucial.com/store/listmfgr.asp?cat=Flash

If you have a local Compusa, they had a 128 SD card by Memorex for $29.99 AR in this weekends ad.

Hmmm....

Lets just see what the prices that Dell are charging, compared to two national stores online prices for the same CF card.

Sandisk 256mb CF card.

First Bestbuy.com (http://www.bestbuy.com/Detail.asp?m=488&cat=533&scat=537&e=11084226) $99.99

Now Compusa.com (http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=289384&pfp=SEARCH) $79.99

And now the ultra high priced dell.com (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=266796) $59.99 BEFORE $10 rebate...

Wow! I'm glad you pointed out Dell's truely high prices.

Sorry for the sarcasm... I'm just in that kind of mood.

one word of advice with Viking rebates, and rebates in general also.

make sure when ordering online, get the rebate before it ships and fill it out. Double-check the postmark date needed.
Send it in the DAY you recieve your card... Viking screwed me cause the rebate expired the day after I recieved the card.... I sent it in the day after that cause I just didn't get around to it. Didn't get the rebate...

Watch the deadlines, and the date the rebate needs to sent in by. Viking had to have it postmarked 7 days after purchase.... It took 6 days from the day I ordered it, shipped, and then received the card.

If I can get an item in town with rebate, close to the online price with rebate... I'll buy it in town. even if I have to spend a little more, to a point.

I absolutely agree. They can really get you on these (what seems to be) such minor technicalities. If you are worried that your product won't ship in time, sometimes it is worthwhile to spend a few extra bucks to upgrade the shipping. Just make sure you read the fine print/rebate details before ordering your product. I've had okay experiences thus far (knock on wood).

not here in the UK, where fielddoc is too.

dell's 256mb compact flash card is an extra £85 incl vat. - that's $133 !!!
and we don't get rebate in the UK either

i bought mine onine for £49

you can't compare US and UK prices.

the only way to have figured that out, is to have looked at your name.... with the UK in it would give a clue.... But for fielddoc? nothing to suggest that he is from anywhere... never even stated that in his post.
