Just wondering what kind of music everyone listens to, since I think we have a wide range of age groups and tastes here. Plus, I need more music to put on my Axim, and I'd like some good suggestions. :)

On my Jornada I have everything from Chopin to Linkin Park, Jpop to Andrea Bocelli. I listen to whatever catches my fancy -- which is everything. Really depends on my mood I guess.

I have a wide range, just whatever sounds good.

However - If you have never listened to the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack, you are missing out, big time.

How about "Everything but boy bands, gangsta rap, country ballads (country rock is okay), and bluegrass (but I like folk)"?

Come on! Where are the other 145639 permutations??? This poll clearly doesn't have enough options, and is leaving out a large segment of the population...

Ditto, but remove country rock for me. Oh, and no Britney/Britney look-alikes/bubble-gum pop for me.

This request is infamously phrased "Where's xxx, you insensitive clod?" on Slashdot. :)

Yeah, I left out a lot - but the most glaring omission has got to be Zamfir, Master of the Pan Flute:

(I highly recommend listening to the sample of "Blue Navajo")

And how could one forget the immortal Wesley Willis:

(Make sure you listen to "Rock and Roll McDonalds")

Not as much "folk", but I really like Loreena McKennitt's "The Book of Secrets". Also just got Nightnoise's "Shadow of Time".

Gregorian chants
Heh. Someone else out there likes early music. :)

Ha. Seeing those examples almost makes me feel like I'm still young. Wu Tang, Sex Pistols, Eazy E, Rob Bass (& DJ Rock), and even Kylie have shared time on my "beatbox" back in the high school and college days! Of course maybe that just means that the poster is as old as I am... :(

Personally, I probably send more time listening to Thai (pop and country) and Japanese (pop) music than anything else.

Interesting - do you have any recommendations?

Hmmm... well if you're in either neighborhoods and really want to try something different...

THAILAND
My favorite is a female singer nicknamed Tong (real name is "Pakkamai Potranun"). She's a great all-around vocal talent (I can't say the same for most Thai pop singers). While she's primarily a pop singer, she recently did a remake of an old Thai classic called "Kwan Riam". Her best album was her latest titled "333".

The longstanding favorite of the masses is a male pop singer nicknamed "Bird" but unlike "Tong" he's often listed under his real Thai name of Tongchai. Very good voice... he's been around for a good 15-20 years, but still holding strong.

I couldn't give recommendations on Thai country b/c I'm just starting to listen it myself.

JAPAN
The most popular pop singer hands-down is Ayumi Hamasaki. There's no obvious reason why she's so big as she's not in any way outstanding in her singing talent IMO, but her songs have a good beat to them and they're rather catchy (if you're into the Japanese-Pop kind of sound).

If you're into the "Babyface" kind of R&B groove, there's a male singer by the name of Ken Hirai who recently had Babyface produce a song for him. His songs have a nice mellow beat and are pretty laid-back and groovin'.

Last but not least, there is a teenager named BoA who's been releasing albums in both Japan and Korea with tremendous success (her full name is Boa Kwon if you look her up). She sings songs in mostly Japanese and Korean, but has occasionally done English and Chinese as well. Her style and her dancing ability are similar to Brittany but her voice is much closer to the talent level of Leann Rhimes. Incredible talent!

Enjoy!

No twangy country or gangsta-rap here, but I'll listen to most everything else.

Fav's are Metallica, King's X, LedZep, Van Halen (and Hagar), Godsmack, Martina McBride, Genesis, Cinderella, Pachelbel, Mozart, Apocalyptica, and Nelly.

Ayu is cliche...she isn't really that good a singer.

Boa is AMAZING.

But the Jpop scene is basically owned by two female singer -- Ayumi Hamasaki, and Hikaru Utada (from what I've heard anyways).

You need more options on this poll! :D
I clicked Country, but I also like Keb' Mo' (the only good blues I have ever heard) and other stuff, including some rock, pop, etc.
May I suggest an option: "Undecided, but NOT RAP!" :)

Bob Marley, Prince, Sting, Stevie Wonder, Andrea Bocelli, Led Zepplin, da Stones, da Beatles, some Rap, House, Techno, UK Garage (oh that Femme Fatale), John Lee Hooker, Fleetwood Mac, did I mention Bob Marley, Manhattan Transfer.

In short, I don't really care for fad music that lives in the moment or on the charts for a month or two. I like real musicians that craft wonderful music that is timeless.

How long do you guys keep music on your CF/SD? I usually switch every 3-5 days, as I've listened to it all (even on a 1GB). :)

I rotate most of mine every few days, too. Some stay on for awhile because they "create a mood" that's useful for my writing. Those usually last for a few months.

I've got a 128 mb CF card that I use for my music, and with OGG formatting, I can usually fit around 40 files on it, along with a few e-books.

I leave mine on quite awhile. I like the mix and there is enough variety that it stays fresh enough. Besides, some of it I have been listening to for 30 years so I have listened to it many times already  .
