I need some feedback here, fast!!!

My new HP 5455 broke (power button doesn't work anymore). I called CompUSA, and they said no problem! -- I have the 2 year warranty from them, so just bring it in, and they'll give me a brand new one! And if I want, I can buy a new 2 year warranty from them.

WHAT?!?!? -- the guy answered: well, if we issue you a new unit, the warranty doesn't transfer over. But you can buy a new warranty. !!!! :x :x :x

Does anyone out there have any info on this?!? I haven't read the small print on the warranty package that I have -- I'll do this tonight, and post more info if there is anything in there...

TIA for all of the help!

That's why I get my Pocket PCs from Best Buy. Their warranty transfers over and over and over. I still have the warranty of my Jornada 548. Talk to the manager and demand that the warranty transfer over.

Might be a good idea to read the fine print before you sign up for a warranty next time.

That is, unfortunately, how their warranty works. I ran into this with my Maestro a few months ago.

Why not just call HP and send it back as deffective?

Yes you will be without an iPaq for a few days but you will avoid losing your CompUSA warranty.

Personally I would never buy an in store warranty, they are just a gimmick to make money for salespeople.

If you do send it to HP, be sure & go in and change the serial number at CompUSA on your TAP if they send back a different unit.

Not all warranties are a gimmick. Most are but Best Buy's is pretty good and I support it because without that warranty, I might still have a 548.

I do agree, you better send it to HP. And read the fine print next time. I got cheated once for not reading the ultra small letters on a paper.

I know that's what financial experts often tell you, but that's not the case with all warranties and it depends on each person's spending patterns. If the warranty allows you to trade-up to a new model (if the previous one is not in-stock), then the warranty was a good investment (especially if you think you would have shelled out all the cash for a new model anyway).

Yes, I'd definitely do this. Keep your CompUSA warranty for repairs that HP won't do, e.g., screen cracks or something like that.

Best Buy's PSP (warranty) policy changed in May of 2002. If you purchased your PDA after May of 2002, your unit is subject to those changes. Essentially, if your unit is replaced by Best Buy outside of your factory warranty (be it one year, ninety days, whatever) then you will need to purchase a new service plan (it will not transfer over). If your unit is replaced by Best Buy during your factory warranty, your PSP will be extended to your replacement unit.

Were the situation StonePro is in right now occur at a Best Buy store, his PSP would be extended to his new unit as the replacement given to him was covered under his factory warranty.

What are the rules for replacement? First off, if the store still has some of your original unit in stock, they'll just swap them out. No sweat. If your model has been discontinued, or is out of stock, you will be given another model. The general rule of thumb is during the first year after purchase you would receive the amount for which you paid originally towards the purchase of another PDA. You would not be able to obtain cash back if there was a difference in price. After the first year of purchase, you should be able to get feature-for-feature (also called technology-for-technology). This basically means that you'll get the one most comparable to your unit.

Most stores that I've encountered are very receptive towards providing an avenue for upgrading if you wanted to pay the difference.

I'm a Best Buy Service Technician, thats uh.. how I know all this stuff.

Like I said, personally. I am not advising anyone else to do the same, I just think there are better ways to insure your device.

You have examples?

Well folks,

You were right -- this IS how CompUSA works. Now for the really stupid part: It says so (one time replacement) right on the freakin box. So I'm obviously too stupid, and "deserve" this...

Yes, I will send it to HP for repair and save the warranty for the screen damage...

NOTE: Why didn't I get the BestBuy warranty? Becuase they don't carry the 5400's in store. I don't know why, but they just don't have 'em.

Thanks for all info!

I would say from experience that if you are interested in extending the coverage on your device go for a manfucaturers warranty like the HP CarePaq, http://www.compaq.com/services/carepaq.

Personally I don't bother with extended warranties anymore because I rarely have one Pocket PC for more than a few months.

That's a great option, but it's still apples-to-oranges compared to the CompUSA or BB option. The ability to bring an old unit in and trade up (especially for a different brand) is something the CarePaq doesn't provide for, though it looks like BB is more flexible than CompUSA on this.

Quite a luxury! I carry around my 38xx like luggage nowadays.
