The voice recordings on my iPAQ 5455 are "crackly" and somewhat distorted...
I first noticed this when it was on the default settings (11,025 Hz, Mono 11KB/s), and it does not seem to change despite changes in the settings.
My 3970 had significantly better recording quality. I know that the speaker on the 5455 is smaller, but I've not heard anything about the microphone being reduced in size or quality.
Note: The recordings sound distorted on the iPAQ as well as on my PC (in Media Player)...
Anyone have this problem?
Thanks,
Matt

I installed the trial version of SoundExplorer, and I played around with the settings some more, and I am finally getting decent recording quality... but...
I've had to push my recording quality up to 22,050Hz, 16 bit Mono at a whopping 43KB/s (vs the default 11KB/s!!!).
I have plenty of memory on my SD card, but if I choose to take notes at a long meeting (and want to have decent playback), I'm going to rack up some serious file sizes in no time!
Strange how the (default setting) sounds so much poorer in quality than on my old 3970...

Another thing worth noting, (which might be nothing):
The double-beep that occurs when a recording is stopped is much slower with my 5455 than with my previous iPAQs.
Doesn't matter if the recording was for 5 minutes or 5 seconds - it is noticeably delayed between beeps.
If nothing else, it just shows that the build is definitely different on the 54xx series...

There are several others experiencing the same. I believe it has to do with some kind of buzzing sound coming from the display. If you put your ear close to the screen while displaying solid while hue you can hear a faint buzz. Anyways, Gerard has POSTED (http://www.pocketpcpassion.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29078) what I believe is the only work around solution for now. check his last post and go from there....
For your recordings you might want to check out NoteM (same thread as above) this will greatly reduce your file size with little or no compromise.
