There was some discussion a while back about "how to" convert DVD movies to PPC. What was the final outcome as to what is the best method for the least amount of space and where can you find a step by step guide. Thanks.

There's a DivX guide at PocketMatrix (http://www.pocketmatrix.com/guides/). There are also a few MPEG1 ones floating around the net; I believe there's one at PocketMovies.net (http://www.pocketmovies.net).

I have it near the top of my priorities to redo the DVD -> Pocket PC guide at PocketMatrix, but I've been a little short on time lately.

I suppose you mean this thread: http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8141&start=0

There was no 'final outcome' really, just that the 'best way' depends on what your own preferences/priorities are: quality over size, size over quality etc etc. In short 'all roads lead to Rome' some are just a little more difficult or longer :D To find out which 'road' you want to take, experiment with short clips at different settings/sizes/bitrates.

I what you want is the SMALLEST size these settings give you around the smallest 'watchable' size:

-Mono 32 or 48kbps MP3 sound
-'Decimate by 2' in virtualdub (cuts framerate in half)
-2-pass DivX with a of bitrate 150/200kbps

This will give a 135/150MB file for a 90mins movie at a widesceen res of 320x176. To compact it even more cut off the end-credits.

No new tutorial is available yet. But the Pocketmatrix one is fine in understanding some of the basics which are necessary.

Has anyone tried using the new Windows Media 9 encoder?
I've tried it with varied results. It is reasonable in 'normal mode' (PocketPC portrait). But if you selct the widescreen/fullscreen option (PPC in Landscape)the video becomes unwatchable with many dropped frames.
This is on an Ipaq 5450 which has the xscale processor, which i believe the new WM9 codecs are optimised for.
I'd be interested to hear of anyone elses successes or failures.
Thanks in advance .
