What 'exactly' is the difference between secure digital and smartmedia? Are they the same? They look the same.

SD cards and Smart Media cards are very different. A sd card is the size of a postage stamp and a couple of millimeters thick, while a smart media card is while a smart media card is 1.5 in x 1.75 in big. Perhaps you meant a MMC card. The SD and MMC are almsot exactly the same. However, the SD card is more secure and comes in larger MB sizes than the MMC.

What exactly do you mean by 'secure'?

Yep,

Also one technical difference: SD cards cannot be read with MMC-readers, but MMC-cards can be read in SD readers. Also MMC stopped after 128Mb, SD is now at 512Mb and rising:)

Secure Digital Cards have a little switch on them to prevent accidental writing to them. Kind of like the switch on the old 3.5 inch floppy disks. :P

Secure is more the secure as in "Digital Rights" 8O

There is a preperation on thes cards, making them prepared for some kind of digital rights management system. They probably have an unique code with them, making it possible to link a piece of music to a SD-card. If you copy it to another medium, the music stops working :(

I have bought a transcend 512 Mb SD today, and it's on the package as well that it is prepared for digital rights management.

By the way, you don't want SmartMedia if you have a choice. It's a dead technology that's on its way out.

Are there even any PPCs with smartmedia slots?

No, although there are SM-to-PC card adapters (and maybe SM-to-CF adapters, I can't remember).

First of all thanks for your help.

I was just wondering if anyone knew of a website on where I can find out how Secure Digital memory actually works? Like what technology it uses and stuff like that.

Try www.sdcard.org . Also do a google search for "what is a SD card".
