View Full Version : ClearSpeed: A Much-Needed Boost for the iPAQ 1910

http://www.revolution.cx/speed/speed.htm

I've been experimenting with ClearSpeed over the past few days on my iPAQ 1910 (I received one recently - what a device), and I'm really pleased with the overall speed increase. The device just feels snappier - I also did a small benchmark that measured the BitBlit speed (how fast pixels can be hurled around the screen) and after activating ClearSpeed I saw a 33% increase in the benchmark speed. It's a good investment of $9.99 if you want to get the most out of your iPAQ 1910.

Sorry, can't agree.
Turbotray is the best and most convient speed stepper for H1910, it is absolutely free.
If you stated clearspeed is faster than turbotray, more comparsion data should be presented, at least you should mention turbotray, although you may get clearspeed free.

Thanks for the heads up Jason. I have been using SpeedStepper with good results to (plus it's free). If someone has used both, is there a difference in system peformance?

Jason didn't say it was the best or that it was more convienent
Have you used Speedstepper? If you did and decided on Turbotray, why?

speed stepper seems to have been causing the touch screen on my 1910 to freeze (4-5 times in the last day or so) so i turned it off and no more problems.
what is the url for turbotray?

I have used SpeedStepper, XScalar, ClearSpeed, and Turbo Tray and I have to say that ClearSpeed is the hands on winner only for the fact it allows assigning custom speeds on an application level.
There are times when I don't want to run at 300T consistently and set my multimedia and games to 300T or 300R and other apps at 200 or even 100mhz.
I was lucky that I was a "beta tester" for version 1 of ClearSpeed and had the opportunity to add some input to the developer. Overall, even though it is $9.99, the added functionality of ClearSpeed makes it well worth the price.

It's my opinion about an application that I've been testing, not a statement about which is the best app.

I've never tried it, nor did I say I did.

I didn't.

It wasn't a post about all the various CPU mod software out there - there are 5+ different software tools that mostly do the same thing. What made you think this was a comparision post?
You're welcome to suggest an alternative that YOU like, but don't level criticism at me for not reading your mind and picking your pet app.

So what is the speed stepping doing to your already highly discussed battery life (or lack of it) on your 1910?

I haven't honestly noticed a difference yet, but I haven't done any benchmarks yet either. :D

I have noticed at most a 10-20% decrease in battery life. Not an issue for me since I charge both at home and at work. Remember, I am using ClearSpeed to dynamically change the processor speed based on the application I am running.

The other aspect of Clear Speed is that it will automatically reduce the maximum speed of the device and the maximum backlight level as the battery gets lower. Starting at 50% of battery remaining it will slowly ramp down these maximums until it gets to 29% remaining at which point it will be aggressive in preserving battery life.
This is an option and can be turned off.
I'm integrating Axim, 39xx and Toshiba support right now for version 2.1 along with a variety of tweaks and enhancements.

Can't wait to see these accelerators develop - just got my 3970 last week to replace the lacklustre Jornada 928 and am thinking of investing in something to speed the beast up. No ideas which one to go with yet for the iPAQ though.
Anyone got any recommendations?

How easy is it to use? I've just set my wife up with the 1910, and I don't want her to have any cryptic apps. I'm not sure which one of these speed increase apps I saw, but the options would almost scare me away.

Well, I've looked at several of the apps on the market, and while ClearSpeed may not offer the fine-grain tuning of HackMaster, I can actually understand what the options in ClearSpeed mean. If simplicity is what you're looking for, ClearSpeed is a great solution - it's VERY simple to understand.

Another thing I like is that ClearSpeed only allows speed modes that are "safe" for the 1910. Apps like Hackmaster and others allow for higher clock speed settings and multipliers that may cause the device to become unstable or even need a hard reset.
Turbo tray allows the user to select the speeds that the program will cycle through. I had tried this by with the 333mhz setting on my 1910 and I had to do a hard reset.

Sounds like Clear Speed may be the one to go with then for me and my 3970 - do we have a timesacle on the iPAQ version? Will there be a trail version?

I'm hamstrung by the lack of a 39xx for testing. If someone wants to work closely with me on testing via email I can comp them free software in return. I've been dropping $$$ left and right on hardware so it's just a matter of priorities right now.
The other issue is that the 39xx series doesn't seem to overclock as well - 470 mhz is the only option and it doesn't work for everyone.
But underclocking for longer battery life is nice along with the backlight stuff.
The next version will offer a free demo mode.
Can't offer a specific time table but I'm actively working on it now (along with 3 other things though).

I'm certainly more than happy tp test out on the 3970, as long as a backup and restore can correct any possible problems. 8O
Obviously as the machine is not even a week old yet I'd not want to risk anything which can damage the hardware but excepting that i'm game. :D

I've been using ClearSpeed for the past month or so (or whenever it officially came out) in auto-scaling mode and it seems to make the 1910 a tad snappier which is nice. For eBook reading I turn the speed down to 100 MHz to save on battery life. I highly recommend it!
