Maybe because the prices only came down on 256 MB SD cards recently.
Besides the obvious larger storage capacity, 256 MB SD cards are also supposed to be faster than 128 MB SD cards (by a factor of 5). I assume the iPAQ 1910 doesn't use the crippled MMC compatibility mode that my 3870 does so that you can see the speed improvement.

I own a Dell, but Pony99CA hit the nail on the head. I brought a 128 B/C I didn't want to shell out the outrageous bucks for the 256. One month later, the 256 price dropped, so now I have two :D .

SD performance is very slow on a 3870. It uses 1-bit transfers, as opposed to the potential 4-bit transfers SD (especially larger capacity cards) can handle. It should work fine, but you'll notice it especially if you do things like install applications to the storage card.

Is that true for any other (non-hp/compaq) PPCs?

I believe the 38xx units are by far the worst. I believe the new iPaqs, the Toshibas, the PPC PE, and the Axim are OK performancewise, but I haven't seen numbers.

I've been using the Panasonic 25MB SFD card in my Cassiopeia E-200 and HP iPAQ h1910 and have not seen any difference in performance... device vs device. Also on the E-200 I don't see the difference between the speeds of te 256MB SD and 256MB CF.
