Since Ed twisted my arm...

My favorite movie has to be The Princess Bride. The movie has just about everything: action, adventure, romance, comedy, suspense. It is an excellent movie.

There are many memorable lines from this movie, including:
"Inconceiveable!"
"Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
"As you wish."
"You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is 'Never get involved in a land war in Asia.' But only slightly less well known is this: 'Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line.'"

"True love saved her in the Fire Swamp, and she treated it like garbage. And that's what she is, the Queen of Refuse! So, bow down to her if you want. Bow to her. Bow to the Queen of Slime, the Queen of Filth, the Queen of Putrescence. Boo! Boo! Rubbish! Filth! Slime! Muck! Boo! Boo!"

OK, maybe this should be the "What is your favorite line from a movie?" post, but you get the idea. I love this movie!!! :rock on dude!:

Best of all, it is a family movie. FYI, Monsters, Inc. is a close 2nd.

So anyway, what's YOUR favorite movie? List a few memorable quote/scenes if you like.

So as long as I'm sitting here unemployed in Greenland, with pleasure boats following me through eel-infested waters at night, I'll add my favorite movie. "The Man Who Would be King." It's got greed, gluttony, debauchery, villainy, comraudery, gore (two, count 'em, two severed heads)....all the makings of a classic.

The Manchurian Canidate

Since then:
BraveHeart

Just one? Hmmm... I would have to say "The Matrix" simply because it has great music, an interesting story and the SFX were totally new at the time. You hardly see an action move anymore that doesn't have the Gaeta Effect.

If you have quicktime - you can see how the Gaeta Effect works at http://www.matrixfansite.com/making/bullet.htm

Other biggies for me:
Buckaroo Bonzai
Star Wars trilogy
Princess Bride
Escape from New York
Indiana Jones 1 & 3
True Lies
Tron

Great topic!

"Greaser's Palace", although not the best movie, is one of the strangest I've ever watched. Made by Robert Downey Sr., it features Jesus coming back to Earth as a Puerto Rican cabaret singer in the Old West. The Holy Ghost wears a sheet, and the Holy Spirit is a rhinestone cowboy. Hilarity ensues.

One of my favorite movies of all time is Strange Brew. Canada, beer and two incredibly stupid guys plugged into the plot from Hamlet. Can't go wrong! The scene were Bob and Doug fight over who gets to get electroshock therapy is priceless.

Here's my general list:

Bladerunner
Gattaca
Wings of Desire
My Man Godfrey
Modern Times
The Life of Brian
Heathers
Braveheart
Lord of the Rings (both so far)
Philadelphia Story
Duck Soup
Hard Boiled
Reservoir Dogs
The Princess Bride
When Harry Met Sally
Clockwork Orange
The Quiet Earth
Amelie
Dune

Tron........hmmm......

I am amazed at the legion that now loves this boring early techno-fest........perfect example that effects can overshadow plot and people will fall for it.

I Had high expectations for Tron, saw it 70mm the weekend it came out, walked away with an "it was OK" feeling at best, but more of a feeling that Disney should have done much more with it story-wise.

Yup. We are just morons that "fell for it" and had the wool pulled over our eyes by Hollywood. Thank goodness for us doofuses that allow smart people that didn't fall for it to hold the high paying jobs.

Ohhh..... look, shiny lights blinking on my phone. Cooooooool.

Wow! sounds like something I might have said to you once Ed :D

Hey, everyone likes some movie that sucks (I share your like of Buckaroo Bonzai ), but I was just a geeky teen when I saw Tron, it bombed for me then, and upon inadvertant repeat viewings since.

Tron has a 6.3 at IMDB, which is respectable. I was a pre-teen when I saw it and it was magic and things that were magic when you were a kid tend to stay magic.

BTW, TRON 2 may be coming out later this year. http://us.imdb.com/Details?0208650 It was supposed to come out in 2001 and keeps getting pushed back. I don't know if it is still on schedule or not.

All time best for me is Braveheart. There are so many severed legs, arms, hands and heads it too hard to keep track. Other on the list would be Patton, French Connection, Matrix and to lighten it up a bit, Young Frankenstein. Marty Feldman had the best eyes :) .

My favorite movie is Casablanca. The movie fascinates me for a variety of reasons, mostly because I'm intrigued by what makes it a great movie. By all rights, it should've been nothing more than a typical studio assembly line movie and easily could have been truly loathsome dreck (fundamentally it's wartime propaganda full of simplistic racial and ethnic stereotyping). Inspired casting, the movie's look (stark black and white), and the emotionally complex relationships were crucial, but I also think that the tension between private needs and public expectations, personal longings and social responsibilities, past commitments and present demands are really what make the movie great. The older I get, the more I appreciate the movie's ability to move beyond the propaganda and the love story to show us something about what it means to be human.

I've never considered myself a movie guy (even though I'm encoding U571 at this very moment).

Anyroad, here's what I would list as my top ones (at this moment):

Any Monty Python movie. Great to see that a lot of you guys like them too. Growing up in the UK at that time you had to like the Python guys just to piss of your parents.

Any Clint Eastwood western. Doesn't get any better than that.

Any movie made from a John LeCarre book. Bit dated now, with the end of the cold war but LeCarre summed up that period better than anyone. Tinker Tailor is still the best TV series of all time!

Lawrence of Arabia. Anyone read his Seven Pillers of Wisdom? Nothing has changed in that part of the world since 1916.

I didn't really like Fellowship of the Ring. I love the books and some books don't translate onto the screen too well.

Ok, if I have to say the film I most enjoy watching, that's easy - It's a Wonderful Life. Corny but heartwarming. Ask me any IAWL trivia question....

However, the best recent film for me is American Beauty.

There are also those films that I tend to stick with while channel surfing, even if I've seen them a billion times:

The Shawshank Redemption
Dave
Gone with the Wind
The American President (I'm not sure why on this one)
Any brat pack film: Pretty in Pink, Breakfast Club, etc., but only if they aren't being censored.

Except for GWTW, the others seem to be showing on TBS every other weekend.
