View Full Version : Cases, what do you think?

When I was a Helio and Palm user, cases were no biggie. Both the cases/covers that came with the devices were fine. When I wanted a belt clip, I went to Office Depot and got a Targus for 14 bucks that could hold my Visor (with memplug) and hold an extra set of batteries.
Enter my Axim.......hmmmm.....the flip top case is near useless as it catches on the inside of just about ANY pocket when pulling it out. The zippered case is nice for when you have a coat/jacket pocket, but alas spring is approaching.
I've checked out the current offerings and besides finding them $$$ 8O , I find none of them really have what I want. i.e. A regular belt clip type case (I clip on my pants pocket so I want a old type "eyeglass" style clip). A velcro or magnetic clip (not over the whole device, just over the top. Not a "sleeve" case, I want to be able to take it out instantly, not fuddle around a PDA-glove. Not metal, I want some padding if it drops. Lastly a pocket in the back for a spare battery and a CF/SD card. No flip cover, no "pocket for everything and it's cousin", no universal super-ultra-mega 360 degree+teather strap clip. Just plain and simple.......I guess I'll have to wait for Targus or some other cheapo mfg to make a case that fits the Dell, and fuddle with the zippered case for now.
But it got me thinkin......What do you like in a case?
I'm not so much asking what you HAVE (but that's welcome), but;
What do you want to see in a case that seems to fall short of what's availble?

My opinion...I haven't seen a case yet that's respectful enough of the PPC design to warrant me buying one. The only case I've purchased for my original Ipaq was the neoprene case from Compaq and only after I dropped my Ipaq on the ground. It was fine when I lived in CA and had a car, but like you, I want something that goes on the body and doesn't look ridiculous. I've resorted to carrying it naked most times. I do like the Innopocket cases, but again, no way to put in on the body that I'm aware of. Although, there might be a hack with a Dremel and a rivet tool that's willing to make it work...

There is an exceedingly long thread on the Dell board about cases and I believe there is a link to one like the one you want.
Personally I want a sleeve type case with a magnetically closing flip top; I want something that I can carry IN my pocket not clipped to it that will add as little bulk as possible and provide protection for the screen. I also want the cover to flip ALL the way back so it won't be in the way when I'm using it. Oh and I don't want to pay more then $20-$25 for it :)
Space for a memory card or 2 would be nice, but not required. I'm not going to keep credit cards or anything in there but if there's a space to put them, I'll probably sometimes put my money in there.
A metal case would work too, extra protection and all, but it would have to fulfill the other requirements--don't want to have to take the PDA out of the case to use it, can't be too bulky, cover flipping all the way back. But there isn't one that exists for the Dell, and none seem to be in the works either.
Oh and no way do I want anything that would require me to put VELCRO or ADHESIVE on my baby! When I take it out of the case I want it to look exactly as it did when I bought it. This ruled out the Cover-Up case which otherwise is nice, though it also doesn't flip all the way back.
I'm 99% sure I'm going to get the Belkin case when it comes out; I wrote them yesterday and they said only a few more weeks...

flower,
Are you looking for something like this one (http://www.ebcases.com/Detail.bok/d8c8e03cf3a078044a89?&category=Dell+Axim&start=1&total=9&no=217) from ebcases? I know it's $10-15 more than you want to spend, but it looks like it meets all your needs.
Have I replied to you with this before? If you don't like this case, can you explain why? I haven't purchased it yet, but if there's something you don't care for, it's probably something I haven't thought of yet.
Anyway, whatever you decide, let me know. Maybe I'll copy... :D

p-flower,
I've just reviewed the Dell thread (had been there last about a week ago) and saw the case you're talking about ecaseworks (http://www.casetechworks.com/cgi-bin/SoftCart.exe/scstore/c-Dell_Axim.html?L+scstore+fbhj7735ff7e937e+1046378092), but caseworks site is up and down like a yo-yo (I've never had the detail on the battery pack case fully load), and the battery case model has an open top (just invites too much dirt). I don't care for the swivel belt clips, but thanks for the input, I'll keep looking too :) [/url]

Yeah the EB case would work, but it's too expensive, hence why I'm going to wait for the Belkin which will be $25. Plus the possiblity that it will be carried by a local store so I won't have to pay for shipping. Best Buy carries other Belkin cases.
Belkin Case (http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Product_Id=135174) in case anyone wants a look :)
As for the holster case, I was actually talking about this case (http://www.marware.com/Holster.html), check it out if you like. Page 7 and 8 of the thread.

PF,
Passed on that one too as it has an open top, though I do like the bike clip option.

have finally found a case that's pretty much what I want: Grinder Gear (http://www.grindergear.com/index.html), but the Nite Ize (http://www.niteize.com/pda.html) is pretty close too.
I like the grinder expedition as it can get all my gear on my belt including keyboard and even sunglasses, but the Nite Ize built in stand is swell too.........decisions.
I'd like to thank Aximsite (http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4884&perpage=10&pagenumber=1) for the wonderful case roundup on the Axim.

FWIW, Vaja make some of the nicest, but they are a bit expensive - I will certainly buy one again for my next ppc...[/b]
