is it possible to switch the ROM on my E740 with the ROM of lets say a iPAQ?

Is it possible to erase the rom and run a differnt OS?

No to the former. OEMs customize their ROM images with drivers for the specific hardware.

As to the latter, Linux has been ported to Pocket PCs (http://www.handhelds.org/). I know it works on iPaqs; I haven't tried it on other platforms. Presumably you could get other OSes, like NetBSD, running; however, this is going to require a lot of manual work.
