I received a memory card "blank" with my Toshiba e335. It has no internal components but it fits into the memory card slot. Is it for protecting the memory slot contacts from dust and moisture, etc.? Should I leave it in when I'm not using a real memory card?

You got it exactly. I usually keep a SD card in my SD slot, so I usually don't use the blank; but if you don't use the slot for extended stretches of time it's not a bad idea to reduce dust and dirt buildup.

I think it really depends on if it's a 64Mg blank or 128Mb blank.....which do you have?

Just kidding!

I have a CF blank and an SD blank for my Axim and I leave both in for the same reasons that Janak mentions.....I lost the blank CF I had with a previous PDA (Compaq Aero 2130) and I was constantly blowing dust out of the slot prior to using it for my CF Ethernet card.....

I have an e310 and a cruzer. The e310 came with a blank, so when the e310 has the SD card, the cruzer eats the blank. I hate dust, lalala
