View Full Version : ActiveSync 3.6 Taking lots of CPU cycles!

Has anyone else noticed that when your PocketPC is sync'd using activeSync, it takes about 7-10% CPU all the time even if you aren't syncing. This is on both a P4 2.0Ghz and a P4 2.8Ghz, it doesn't matter. I've seen this same thing on my friend's Athlon computer as well. I always want to take my PocketPC off the craddle just to get that 8-10% CPU back.
Anyone else seen this? Anyone have any ideas how to fix it?
Thanks!

Well, if you aren't actively syncing files or data, you can close out Activesync by ending both wcsecomm.exe and some other file (i cannot remember the name offhand) with a similar name (wcesmgr?). Then if you need to sync again just run ActiveSync again. This is what I do at home, so that ActiveSync isn't taking up my resources. As far as it taking up 7-10% of the CPU, i'm not quite sure.

Yes. Unfortunately this is not specific to 3.6, but rather every version of ActiveSync I've used, and on every machine I've used. :(
I usually pull it out before I do any gaming on the machine..

You know what's even funnier is even if you remove it from registry where it tells it to run at Windows startup automatically it will re register itself the next time you run it. HA HA!

I use Kill ActiveSync.
"This Freeware Application Will Kill The MS ActiveSync Icon From The System Tray and Prevent ActiveSync From Loading Again Until You Run It Again. To Use, when you are done using MS ActiveSync simply run this application and select "Kill ActiveSync" It will then stop the program from running and prevent it from starting up on next reboot. ActiveSync can be run again by clicking its shortcut" Read the ReadMe.txt for automation instructions."

Thanks, but I prefer to use Startup Monitor (http://www.mlin.net/StartupMonitor.shtml) which is more of a catchall. It will notify you if ANY program tries to register for startup.
You may find it useful also.

To me it make much sense if you have the auto sync always on it will take so much CPU... what if just use the 'Palm' way :P click and sync? I guess things might be better

As a former palm user this is the one think I wish for. A button on my base station where I can press it and have it sync with my computer instead of having the program loaded up all the time

I've actually noticed, that Activesync shows up on my Axim's switcher bar. However, I never have it loaded because I usually use Pocket Plus much more often.
Perhaps I'll suggest it to Spb and ask them why the Activesync app. doesn't show up when I show all the programs running.
