Does ActiveSync create a virtual comport which could possibly limit performance to sync via USB and a network, or does it do this only for bluetooth?

My understanding is that when syncing over a network there is no such limitation. I transfer files via Activesync/Wifi much faster than Activesync/USB.

Activesync backups are super fast over tcp/ip, wired or wireless. I highly recommend this option if you can. My biggest gripe with syncing over the network is some conflicts cannot be resolved unless you sync from serial/usb.

I'll try to sum up:
My iPAQ stats are in my sig below. I'm using a 3com AirConnect AP. My DSL comes into a hub (so I can connect stuff outside of the gateway) then out to a WinXP box with 2 NICs and I'm using ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). So the WinXP box connects to another hub and from there the AP and the rest of my network connects.
I have all the connection settings on my Pocket PC set to "work" and it uses DHCP. In settings on Active Sync on the desktop make sure it is enabled to connect over the network. After the first time I connected the iPAQ to my PC (not the WinXP box I use as a gateway, a different one) with a serial/usb cable I was able to sync easily over the network by opening Active Sync on the iPAQ and clicking on Sync.
Well, that's the way I do it.
ICS sucks though and I am looking for a more managable solution like an actual wireless router/hub.
Also, and I don't know if this will help, but this page (http://www.netmotionwireless.com/support/technotes/2114.asp) about NetMotion Mobility client software has some answers to the original question... I think.
UPDATE: And this page (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/columns/bowman/september24.asp) over at microsoft does a good job explaining what I kind of half assed explained above.
