Help me settle a bet: what was the original flavor of Doritos? And which came first, Nacho Cheese flavored or Taco flavored? This site gets the best and brightest visitors, so I'm confident someone out there knows the answer. (Already checked Doritos.com and Google, to no avail.)

My husband and I vote Nacho. Taco is way new.

Ditto - Nacho Cheese. Taco? Not back in my days... Cool Ranch was the 2nd flavor I encountered, and it's been my favorite for many years.

Cool Ranch is my husband's favorite. Unfortunately, a few years ago, they decided Cool Ranch wasn't eXtreme enough, and they made COOLER ranch. Which don't taste quite as good.

He says he remembers that Taco is actually an old flavor (perhaps I ignored it because I thought it was gross?). Maybe I'm confused because the rebranding to Taco Bell Taco Supreme flavor happened in recentish memory.

BTW - I found this funny link:

Hmm. I'm pretty sure I didn't see Taco anywhere 10 years ago. Weird. Was it a non-Northeastern thing again? (like jinxes getting you a coke...)

Hmm, maybe we're wrong, Kati: I tried a quick Google search (http://www.google.com/search?q=doritos+taco+flavor&sourceid=mozilla-search&start=0&start=0). Here's one of the results (http://members3.boardhost.com/taquitos.net/msg/896.html). That site, btw, is "taquitos.net", apparently a blog on you-know-what. On the other hand, there's this link (http://myphlip.pearsoncmg.com/cw/mpviewce.cfm?vceid=3227&vbcid=4823). Oh, wait, this link seems to be the best so far (http://www.internet-exploiter.com/currenteventstwelve.htm). Gotta love Google...

I was wrong.

It is Taco.

Taco is either 1966 or 1967.

Nacho Cheese is 1972.

Perhaps it's gone in and out? During my chip-eating lifetime, Taco has not been the most obvious flavor.

Heh. Oh well, it seems part of the confusion stems from their "reintroduction" of a Taco flavor in the 70s... I see references to the original "plain" flavor.

Geez, we have no life :P

honestly, which one is better? nacho flavor or taco?

I wasn't around in the sixties, but I remember the 70's. My favorite flavor was sour cream and onion. This was way before cool ranch, and IMHO far better tasting. They would come in a green bag and the seasoning on them was very similar to some of the extreme choices they have today. I haven't been much of a dorito eater since they quit making sour cream and onion.

I have never heard of taco flavored Doritos. I only knew of Nacho and Cool Ranch before they did the "Extreme" flavors. My favorite flavor is Cool Ranch. I'm not a big fan of their new "Extream" line.

Well, as someone who wasn't around in the 50s, 60s, or 70s I've had all the flavors available to me pretty much since birth and I STILL only knew of Nacho Cheese and Cool Ranch.

I'm going to go looking for Taco flavored on my next trip to the store!

btw - I hate Cool Ranch so Nacho Cheese gets my vote.

I think there were plain Doritos, but I could be mistaken. I'm pretty sure Nacho Cheese replaced Taco Doritos (although I do seem to recall they were both available at one time).

If you really care, you might check out the Taquitos snack site (http://www.taquitos.net/).

Well, the preliminary indications are: original corn Doritos were introduced in 1966; Taco-flavored Doritos debuted in 1967; and Nacho Cheese-flavored appeared in 1972. This, according to an e-mail purportedly from Frito-Lay. (I still want to confirm this with F-L, since I don't trust that my girlfriend wouldn't have forged this just to win the bet... )

It would fit the timeline on the Frito Lay site.

Taco was the only flavor availble when I was a lad. Kind of like very salty Tostito's with paprika mixed in. I really didn't care for Dorito's until Nacho Cheese came availble in the midwest during my early teens.

I don't think I have ever seen Taco flavoured Doritos, the first I can remember is the Nacho Cheese and then Cool Ranch. And I'm old enough to remember 1972. 8O But not 1968.

I do wish that I was able to buy the Lime and Salt flavour of Fritos Corn Chips. The only place I have seen them is in Mexico and they really are the best. Guess I have to plan another vacation! :)

My god, I can't believe someone would spend that much time on snack food, They're just chips! (then again, that guy would probably look at me and say "They're just Organizers for gods sakes" :))

Actually, joking aside, I found the site very interesting, thanks for posting it!

The reason I made the bet was that I remember Nacho Cheese Doritos from way-back-when in the old bags, and I don't remember seeing Taco Doritos until the bags were redesigned several (10?) years ago. My thought is that perhaps Taco came early-on, then disappeared for awhile after Nacho Cheese and Cool Ranch took off, then reappeared later (possibly with the Taco Bell tie-in).

I'm not going to give up without a fight, so I'm going to follow-up on the availability of both flavors, to see if I can get a tie on the technicality that Taco came first but Nacho Cheese has actually been available longer...

Yeah, wow Doritos are way older then me!

I've tried the new incarnation of Taco flavored doritos, they really taste just like taco bell taco supreme...it's WEIRD! But not entirely bad...

Nacho is still my favorite. Cool Ranch takes 2nd place.

I seem to recall there were actually Taco Bell Doritos made for a while, probably as a limited-time promotion. I wonder if they just took that recipe and dropped the "Taco Bell" from the name.

The original Doritos flavor is Original "Doritos Toasted Corn" tortilla chips. I absolutely love them and have been eating them for many many years.
I have been here in Nashville, TN for 4 years from So Calif and can't get them out here. Frito Lay doesn't distribute them east of Texas. I have called them about it. Not many people remember these great chips. Most people asked think of Nacho Cheese flavor as the original.
Check out this link with a picture of the original bag:
