A number of new Konica cameras do - in fact, they have <i>dual</i> SD and Memory Stick slots.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/kd400z.jpg" /><br /><br />Even if you consider the Memory Stick to be a detriment, at least it <i>does</i> have a SD slot in the first place, which most cameras don't... in case you're looking for a solution to interchange media with your Pocket PC. Apart from this 4-megapixel model, they also have a 5-megapixel and a 3-megapixel model with the dual slot setup.<br /><br />What other good digital cameras out there feature SD?

I had a similar discussion recently and found there were 2 pieces of helpful information.

One was the search engine at dpreview.com (http://www.dpreview.com) which allows for searches by feature. Sadly, at this time there are not a ton of SD cameras out. I imagine this will change (I hope) as the price of a reasonable sized SD card has plummeted recently.

The other suggestion was the Minolta DiMAGE X (http://www.minoltausa.com/eprise/main/MinoltaUSA/MUSAContent/CPG/CPGProducts?cname=dig&amp;fname=dig_slr&amp;Mname=DiMAGE_X). Seems like a nice little camera with some good reviews.

I have been waiting for a topic like this! Since I don't own a digital camera yet  , I have been looking for some specifically with an SD slot. The only ones I could find were the Kodak cameras.

Many of the Kodak cameras have SD/MMC slots, for example the 4 megapixel model LS443:

http://www.kodak.com/global/en/digital/easyShare/ls443/ls443.jhtml

Likewise, many of the hp photosmart series of digital cameras come with SD slots, such as the model 850:

http://h30015.www3.hp.com/products/detail.php?high_level_category_id=3&category_id=3&sub_category_id=da4c9ec790569f695fcf48fa2fc8fac0&prodnum=Q2190A

I'm not sure why PocketPCThoughts thinks there is a problem finding cameras with SD slots??

There are some good compact cameras that are coming out in the future if anyone can wait.
They were announced at CES.

The Casio Exilim EX-Z3 (http://www.dpreview.com/news/0301/03010902casioexz3.asp)

and Pentax Optio S (http://www.dpreview.com/news/0301/03010801pentaxoptios.asp)

Links are to the dpreview CES reports.
They both use Pentax's new sliding lens technology which makes them breakthrough cameras for the 3MP+3x-Zoom category.

I was going to say Kodak Cameras but someone beat me to it. Kodak is actually moving away from CF slots. While some may not like Kodak cameras, I love the menu interface and find them plenty feature rich enough. Now granted I am not a professional photographer, but if I was I would be looking at the Cannon digital cameras anyway and those are around 3 - thousand as opposed to 2 - 4 hundred.

Hmmm- I thought Fuji was pushing the XD cards and the previous format of choice was smart media. :?:

the minolta dimage x and f100 are two good cameras that uses the sd card. and as mentioned, a lot of kodaks do too. the fuji's uses xd, not sd...a memory format they co-developed with olympus if i'm not mistaken. plus there are countless numbers of miniDV camcorders out there that uses the sd slot as storage for photos (although i would never use a camcorder to snap pictures). more and more cameras will be coming out with sd cards in the future...i hope. the higher end ones will probably stick to compactflash because compactflash is faster than sd...not to mention that there are 24x compactflash cards that are already out there.

hvlien- would the write speed have an impact on the number of shots you can take in a given period (like 3 shots per x number of seconds) or do the cameras have an internal memory buffer that works as a stage for slower write storage mediums?

Germany-based Mustek has new, affordable, low-budget model called MDC 3500, that has SD slot.

http://www.mustek-europe.com/pdf/mdc3500.pdf

So anyone used on of these SD-slotted cameras? How do they like the mixed use between camera and PDA?

i have bought a minolta dimage x 2m pixel camera. it uses sd memory cards. it has proved to have been a great buy if you don't need to print mega posters. just fine for pictures anywhere. there is a new 3 m pixel camera out now. the minolta has an optical zoom which is better than any of the other digital mini cameras out there as most have only a digital zoom if at all. it's great to keep in your pocket and then transfer the card into the ipaq.

I have the Casio Exilim EX-S2 myself. It used SD and is a great mini-camera. I even take it with me when I run. You can literally take it just about anywhere.

I use the HP Photosmart and it is a sweet camera. It has 16 MB Built in and then a SD Slot. I like the heft of the camera and compared to my 1megapixel Kodak ( Which was great) this camera is incredible.

How timely. I just got an email from Staples about their weekend sale on the HP Photosmart 320. It's a 2.1MP camera and it's only $99.94 after a mail in and in store rebate. The details are here (http://instorespecials.staples.com/staples/listing_detail.asp?listingid=-2098682185&storeid=2278801&offerid=).

I just picked up a Minolta Dimage F100 for $400 bucks from Good Guys (I probably could've found it a little cheaper online). So far it seems to be a very nice camera with a bunch of manual features (I'll rarely or never use) and a bunch of cool automatic features. I'd highly recommend it and let you know if that recommendation changes as I use it more.

Here's (http://electronics.cnet.com/electronics/0-6613935-1304-9791461.html) a Cnet review along with a ton of user comments.

And here's (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/minoltadimagef100/)a review from Digital Photography Review.

If you look at the stylish ultracompact cams and up to the midrange you won't have a problem finding SD units. Good enough for me since I'm not looking at the serious high end right now.

But what's the best 3MP 3x-optical SD ultracompact (not much larger than 3" x 2" and ~0.8" thin, starting around 4oz+)? Optio S & Exilim EX-Z3, and Dimage Xi, recommendation please? IIRC the first and last have or will have waterproof casing accessory too...

And Kyocera/Yashica's Finecam series are also attractive as compact point-n-shoot units. Their Finecam S4 and now S5 are (were?) the smallest 4MP/5MP 3x-optical I could find...

P.S. In my Dimage X experience SD write speed *is* noticeable, I wish it's as fast as my CF digicams...

Hi, first post, driven to it by the SD camera discussion. I just wanted to point out that the Minolta DiMAGE Xi and F-100 can both make VGA copies of shots taken in other higher resolutions to your SD card in-camera, making them highly suitable if you are likely to need to e-mail instant shots from your Pocket PC back to work/friends whatever, but need the higher res. for good printing later. If you need serious resolution and SD card then F-300 has just been launched with 5MP. Xi and F-300 have better write speed and larger buffer RAM than X and F-100. Can anyone tell who I work for?

What's that you say, you're working on the brand spanking new Minolta Pocket PC with a built-in 5MP 10x-optical digicam? And it's waterproof??
Oh mama...

I have a LS443, and was so impressed I bought the Lens Kit, with Wide Angle, Telephoto, and two closeup lenses.

It's great! You take a HIGH quality picture, not the cr*p thing like the ones with mobile phones, get the SD card, put in your Pocket PC, and send it via e-mail (yay to Bluetooth and GPRS!).

Very very very good!

Xi and F-300 have better write speed and larger buffer RAM than X and F-100.

Just to be clear my earlier post actually meant the slow speed of my SanDisk SD card, which I blame. But it's good to know the digicam itself can improve the write speed w/ larger buffers and whatnot?

Does the LS443 require the docking station for recharging? Or is that just the USB interface to the computer?

What about the Panasonic SV-AV10 or upcoming SV-AV30? It's one of those tiny convergence devices with an SD slot, but forget about it if you want Hi Res pics and video.

I had the SV-AV10, it was very addictive but ultimately underpowered, I was hoping a second-gen model would be better (SV-AV30/20) and I have hopes...

The AV10 could only shoot like 6-7fps MPEG-4 at 320x240, which proved very jerky...

I have an HP Photosmart 320, with 8MB built in, and an SD slot. It's a nice camera, but the bundled software is the usual lousy HP stuff that they bundle with everything. On the plus side you can bypass the whole mess and have the camera mount as a drive (Though that's not true for my Officejet v40 printer.... :x).

It does need the cradle for charging. The manual says the camera can be powered and operated with the charger connected directly to the camera, but it'll not charge the battery. To do it you have to use the cradle.

The cradle comes with this camera as part of the standard package.

What do you do for charging when you aren't at home/office then?

The charge lasts 100 shots with flash :D . I have a spare battery, and if I'm travelling I bring the cradle. Not a big deal, in the big scheme of things

It's PMA at beginning of March, traditionally a great time for many new photo products to be shown/announced for the first time and I am sure you'll find a lot more desirable digicams with SD card being launched there. If you are thinking of spending your cash on a digital camera, just hang on for a couple of weeks so you can get juice on all the latest tech stuff. And you never know, your dreams may come true, apart from a Minolta Pocket PC that is....

There is already a waterproof housing for the DiMAGE X and Xi on the market for up to (down to?) 30 meter depth. Also, because the cameras lens does not extend the casing is pretty slim compared to housings which have to have a 'bubble' on the front to accomodate room for a conventional extending zoom barrel. Happy Diving/Surfing/Skiing/Sailing.

How much is the F300 going for?

In the UK, around £450-500. Probably around the same numbers in $, that's the way it usually goes.
