So, I ordered a iPAQ 3850 from refurbdepot.com for a friend and they sent me a 3845 instead. Did I get hosed or are they virtually the same thing?

It says that there is 64MB of memory in the memory manager and it has the CF Sleeve so what else could be different?

I think you mean you got a 3835. I don't know of a 3845.

If that's the case, they're the same unit (3850 & 3835). I believe with Compaq's numbering scheme, they would assigned one model number for units sold online and another for units sold in retail stores.

Nope, I mean I got a 3845. On the back of the PDA to the left of the serial number it says:

MODEL
3845

That's strange. I would guess it's the same as a 3835 and 3850 since it's in the same range. The description you give certainly seems to qualify it as the same unit.

I'd be willing to bet that almost all the people on this board haven't heard of the 3845...

If I recall correctly, the 3845 was a model made especially for Costco, or at least it was a package that was sold predominantly by them. I don't believe the package came with everything that came with the 3835/3850, but the iPAQ itself was identical. I also seem to remember that it came in a "shrinkwrap" plastic package, rather than a box.

You didn't get hosed, as long as you got all the other goodies that normally come with the 3800 series (cradle, extra stylus, plastic cover, software, etc.), AND as long as you didn't get a refurbished unit without your knowledge. The best thing to do is call HP/Compaq and ask them whether your package was legit.

Although I never saw a 3845, even in Costco (and I'm there alot) it is on the support page. It must have been added later in the game beacuse it was never listed in the beginning when I had to chose between the 3835 and the 3870. So check out http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/handheldiPAQ/us/locate/71_4613.html

That should help clear up things a bit. But I would still complain if I didn't get exactly what I ordered. Little details like this need to be clarified. That's the difference between a good vendor and a bad one.

The iPAQ 3845 was a special contract unit sold ONLY at Costco stores.
It is identical to the 3835, which is identical to the 3850- Compaq's naming convention was (typically)
30= consumer | 50,70= commercial
anything with 5 at the end was origionally to be a 'package'- some additional hardware or software would be included, but they dropped the packages and left the name just for confusions sake.
There are usually not any differences in hardware or software in consumer and commercial units, with a few exceptions here and there.
(3930= 32 meg rom, no integrated BT, 3970, BT integrated and 42MB ROM, etc.)

I really wish they would have stuck to thier own naming convention, this would make it easy to know differences in units.
