Connect Your PC to the Internet Using a Smartphone

The Pocket PC is great, but I still can't whip up Visual Studio .NET on it. So, there I am with a wirelessly connected Pocket PC (Phone Edition) and a disconnected laptop. How do we know if our phone is a Smart Phone or not? Is the Sanyo 4900 (Sprint has it for sale for use with their service) a Smart Phone?

Bluetooth enabled phone such as Sony-Ericcsson T68is works great with ipaq or laptop too!

And if your laptop doesn't have bluetooth, the T68 and many other phones with IR ports can work just as well, too! :D

Has anyone in the U.S. used one of these on a U.S carrier (Preferably T-Mobile.)? Comments? Am I correct in understanding that the Orange SPV is a world phone?

The orange SPV is unfortunately stuck to a UK operator, unless you buy the phone outright.

The phone is tri-band, though.

I see "unlocked" ones from the U.K. on eBay. I'm assuming those should work over here. Surely somebody has broken down and put one to work in the U.S. :?: :?:

The Sanyo 4900 (I have one) is not a SmartPhone, however you can use it as a modem for your laptop (but not a PocketPC). You have to buy a USB cable and some software, both of which are available on the Sanyo website.

Annoyingly, if you also want to sync your Outlook contact info to the phone, you'll need the same USB cable, but a different software application, sold separately, of course.

Not that I know of. The 4900 doesn't have IR. I believe USB is the only choice and since the iPaqs don't do USB-host, it won't work.

Is there no other cable I can use to hook the sanyo up to my ipaq? Like a 3rd party cable? I always see all of those kinds of cables for connecting phones to pocketpcs. Or is there any way I could use a phone that I CAN use with my ipaq, via IR or cable, and still work with Sprint's cheapest data plan? ($40/mo.)

I take it you have done this. Does it work well? I have a T68i and a Socket Compact Flash BT Card that I use with my Toshiba e740. I do have a Compact Flash PC Card Adapter. Is there anything else I would need? Could you provide any setup instructions, or provide a link to some? I would use on a Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop loaded with Win XP Pro (also have 2nd hard drive with Win 98 SE, whichever would work best).

Would appreciate any advice you could offer.
