View Full Version : Best Security Tools?

This is similar to some other software threads, but with a different focus. I would like to know what kind of security tools are out there for PPC. I’ve done Google searches but don’t get as good of results as just asking folks who have had PPCs for awhile. Some of the kinds of tools I’m looking for are:
1. Port scanners/OS detectors (wish there was a port of nmap)
2. freeware ssh client.
3. sniffer (saw another thread elsewhere about this, but most of the sniffers seem to be hardware brand dependent).
4. Ping sweepers.
5. Bruteforce tools.
I do some security analysis at work and would love to be able to do some of these things from my Axim. I’d prefer freeware, but could go for cheapware instead.

vxUtil (http://www.cam.com/vxutil.html) is a free network utility.

PocketWarrior (http://www.pocketwarrior.org) will work with PRISM-based WiFi cards. MiniStumbler (http://www.netstumbler.com/download.php?op=viewdownload&cid=1&orderby=titleA) will work with another (Lucent?) chipset.

I did some more looking around and found out that my WCF12 may be using the Prism chipset. Hopefully PocketWarrior will work out for me.

winc (http://www.giftxport.com/newton/Newt-IPCalc.html): similar to pocket warrior and mini stumbler, works great, might support your linksys. (not sure if it's free or not, but haven't seen any nagscreens yet)
Newton IP Calculator (http://www.giftxport.com/newton/Newt-IPCalc.html): awesome ip calculator, includes a MAC vendor lookup and an IP convertor (free)
vxUtil (http://www.cam.com/windowsce.html): includes port scanner, ping sweep, dns audit and other useful tools (free). Check out their site for some other cool tools.
I haven't found a free SSH client yet, but if you do, let me know (or if you find any other good tools, please share in this thread, I do network security for living, and would love more tools).

Yes Pocket warrior does work with Linksys WCF12.
(FAQ says WCF11 as well.)

I think I may have found an OpenSource SSH client: http://www.rainer-keuchel.de/wince/ssh.html
Don't know if it works with PPC though, could someone please test it and let us know?

it definitely runs, but I don't have a network hooked up, and if I do it thru IR, my ppc has to be upside down in order to link to my IBM thinkpad. This one also supports SSHv2, so that's really a good find. Was considering installing a JAVA engine I saw mentioned somewhere, and download a JAVA based SSH client, but this is far better. I will test more when I get home tonight. Thanks!
btw, check out http://www.rainer-keuchel.de/wince/dirlist.html , this guy has some really cool ports (apache, SED, etc...)

That's interesting stuff, but not the friendliest link. :-) A better link is http://www.rainer-keuchel.de/software.html. It lists the software without all of the downloadable items being exposed.
The main link to this guy's site is at http://www.wince-devel.org.
