I think we all would love for software to be free. But we know that good free software is far and few between. I was just wondering if anyone has any good "must haves" as far as freeware goes. Games or utilites... I dunno it doesn't matter. I just wanted to see what was out there for free.

Thanks
-Brian

PalmReader (http://www.peaunutpress.com) this is the best book format. You can buy one book and read it on a PPC, Palm, Mac, or windows computer. This is a must have if you are an avid reader. You can also make your own books for the reader with relitive ease.

I also use Pocket Nav (http://www.scottandmichelle.net/scott/cestuff.html) for my program switcher.

If you have wireless PPC you might want ot consiter vxUtil (http://www.cam.com/vxutil.html).

You will also want to pick up PHM Registry Editor (http://www.phm.lu/Products/PocketPC/RegEdit/)

I forgot about my picture viewer. I use Pocket Beholder (http://members.fortunecity.com/broadsword/Beholder.html)

To add to what hasn't been said:
Pocket Nester, YAME, Pocket TV, Mobile Pencil, and JWPce (http://www.physics.ucla.edu/%7Egrosenth/c_main.html).

Also go to freewareppc.com and search the forum for the other threads like this one.

Quick question on WisBar: does it conflict with Pocket Plus?

I had no idea WisBar was free, and therefore didn't even consider it as an option. I just downloaded it from the link, and would like to install, but not if it will conflict with Pocket Plus.

I don't know about a conflict, but I'm waiting for the new version of WISbar that's supposed to come out this month. It's being completely rewritten to be more efficient, and has a LOT of cool new features...

Backup, install it... if it messes up just remove it or worse comes to worse restore.

Nah - I'm willing to wait. I have the Dell Switcher program going for now.

Go to your Pocket Plus settings (Start>Settings>System>Pocket Plus) and uncheck the "Close Button" options. Then launch and customize WISBar.

I have run the two together for over a month and have had *no* probelm at all. Go for it!

Lately I have actually switched to MAgic Button: http://www.trancreative.com/mb/ as it allows full access to the notifications and connection icon in the start bar yet still allows running task icons and a battery meter. Review will be available soon. But I can tell you that I have been running it for a week with no problems at all, other than the battery meter sometimes losing its level.

Some of my favorite apps are freeware. Here are some highlights:

Eval: Great Calculator by Jonathan Sachs http://home.attbi.com/~jonsachs/

IR Copy: Send/Receive files from a non ActiveSync computer
http://www.geocities.com/hfrweb

PocketBlinds: Skin for the PPC that besides making my handheld look good, it makes the close button a real close - not a minimize. Has good default XP skins
http://www.stardock.com ; skins @ http://www.wincustomize.com

CabInstl: Allows you to specify where a cab file will be installed (great for when you are using WiFi & are downloading an app directly onto your ppc)
http://s-k.al.ru

EzyUnzip: Freeware ZIP http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=1066&associateid=9

Outbox Buddy: Adds a signature to your outgoing emails (can specify what signature for each inbox)
http://www.syncdata.it

Vbirthday: scans contacts & sums up everyone's birthday. Great for looking at the month to see what gifts you need to get
http://www.vasilenok.com/products/vbirthday.html

PocketLamp: Great if you are stuck in the dark. Teeny app that turns up backlight on a white screen.; Sister app is PocketMirror
http://www.allware.com.mx

Metro: Used this subway route planner in 10+ cities over the years. http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=1145&associateid=9

I know there are plenty of other freeware apps in my 256mb CF card I am missing - but these are some fairly useful ones.

TotalCommander CE (http://www.ghisler.com/ce.htm): a pretty good file explorer which supports ZIP (i.e. treats zip files like folders).

TodaysInfo (http://www.louterrailloune.com/todaysinfo.html): a Today plugin that displays meters for battery, program memory, storage memory, power level and storage card (only one though).

tAgenda (http://www001.upp.so-net.ne.jp/kohgo/index_en.html): a Today plug-in that displays appointments and tasks in a much better way than the native PocketPC 2002 plugins. Also localized in French, Spanish, German, Italian and Japanese.

What about this...
http://www.g7jjf.demon.co.uk/elite.htm

Elite - the old space trading sim.. ported to PPC. Apparently it has issues with the E740, but I'm running it on my iPaq3870, and I must admit, I'm surprised it's freeware. V good.[/url]
