They also have the Cruzer package (includes the SD card, plus a USB "adapter") for $69 after a rebate. I have no clue how good Neutron Express is or isn't, but it's about time SD memory got cheap. Now, how come you guys haven't found 512MB for less than $100?

Hey, $99 at CompUSA is a pretty good deal. If it was the Cruzer version, even better. Be happy. :-)

When I last bought my 128 MB version from Amazon from a link in here I didn't get the promised rebate.

So now I take rebates with a big grain of salt.

My advice is to always look at the before rebate price and decide if its a good deal or not.

This strikes me as an excellent price even without the rebate. I'll let you know for certain after my cruzer and sd card arrive in a couple of days. 8)

I bought the SanDisk 128 MB SD card from Amazon from a link posted here, too. I got the rebate without a problem.

However, I still haven't gotten the rebate for my Viking 512 MB CF card, also purchased through Amazon around Thanksgiving.

Me neither, although I'm not rejected on it either.

That got me to check http://www.wheresmyrebate.com to see the status of mine. It was approved and has an estimated mailing date of 2/21.

Interestingly, I bought two things from Staples (a shredder and Microsoft Streets & Trips 2003) after I bought the CF card, and I have already gotten both of those rebate checks.

My 256 MB Cruzer just arrived today from Neutron Express. :-D I used the USB drive to copy my 128 MB card to my laptop for backup, and it went reasonably quickly. I then ran ScanDisk on the 128 MB card, and it found nine file fragments. After I recovered them, I checked them out in an editor and realized they were some HTML and Flash files that had mysteriously disappeard from my SD card a couple of months ago. A little massaging and I was able to recover those files and copy them to my laptop, too.

Next, I copied the files from my laptop to the 256 MB card. Again, everything seemed to go just fine. I now have over 150 MB free on my SD card. :-)

Here are some quick timing results. I copied a 3.5 MB MP3 from main memory to my 128 MB and 256 MB cards. I compared this with Compact Flash by copying the same file to my 512 MB CF card. The times were as follows:

To 128 MB SD card: 17.6 seconds
To 256 MB SD card: 15.2 seconds
To 512 MB CF card: 6.5 seconds

So the speed appears to be slightly better, but not the 5x increase I was hoping for. Both SD cards are significantly slower than CF.

NOTE: These timings were done on my iPAQ 3870, which implements SD using MMC-compatibility mode. This is a one-bit transfer, and is slower than full SD speeds.

Thanks for the report, Steve. Now, the real question is how many times faster are 4-bit implementations over 1-bit? Why haven't you already gotten a 5450 and tested it out?

Two reasons -- money and 5450 issues. I just got TravRoute's update for the 5450 so my Pocket CoPilot GPS will work, but I'm still worried about the lower audio levels I've read about.

If you send me $600, though, I'll be happy to try.
