Is there a way to record just a wav using the mic. All i can do is record a wav in a note. I just want to have a wav file and save it as a wav. I used to be able to do this on my older Casio i am sure there is a way to do it now but i don't know how.

I just use NoteM. It can do wave, MPEG, and mp3 encoding on the fly, granted the Freq. Response on the built-in mics aren't great, but you can easily record meetings and concerts. If you wish to increase the sound quality and make it stereo(basically mono on 2 channels) you can manipulate in a third party software package like Sound Forge or Cool Edit Pro 2. You can also filter out background noise, hiss, crackles and pops that the PPC mics always seem to pick up.
NoteM is free here (http://www.geocities.com/zavorine/wince/mp3.htm).

Just find your Green little ActiveSync icon near the clock, right-click and Explore your device. Scroll down that list (Assuming it starts you in the "Mobile Device" folder) and you should see Recording1,....Recording2....They are wav files, just right click\copy them and Right-Click\paste them on your desktop or something....they should work like a regular wav from what i can tell.

I don't know if this is "on topic," but *really* irks me is the fact that on the PPCPE you're not able to record a note simply by pressing a button. I am in the process of sampling several programs that let you do this. So far, Fonix is in the lead... we'll see.

Yes, open the Note app, but not a 'new' note (or if you open a new note, X out of it). Then click the tape icon at the bottom of the screen to the right of the tools menu. Record away. Then you will have RecordingN files, as described in this answer:

REALLY ? This is news to me as I do this all the time with my hp Jornada 568, just press and hold the record button and talk. Release the button when you are done. Ta da - a new recording has been made. Couldn't be easier. Have they left his button off newer PPC's? I thought it was a requirement to be called a PocketPC.

the PPCPE devices made by HTC do not have a record button. But you can re-program one of the other 2 buttons (contacts or calendar) to be the record button. IMHO, the 2 buttons at the top are useless as shortcuts to calendar/contacts since I still need a stylus once I'm in contacts or calendar, so I reprogrammed them to be Fonix VoiceDial on the left and Record on the right....makes more sense since neither of those apps require any stylus action, I just use the buttons for hotkeys.

I cant speek for other models, but comparing my T-Mobile O2 XDA to a compaq I-Paq, it looks like they changed the mapping of the record button (upper left side of the device) to be the volume button. You can confirm that this is the 'record' button by going into the boot loader test menu, choosing the button test and seeing which button it finally switches to OK for 'Record == '.
Personally I don't care at all for how the volume button works, and would rather have it somewhere else or just available through the software. Unfortunatly the record button isn't on the list of buttons you can re-map with the control panel app, so the other suggestion of replacing calendar or contacts with record would be the way to go I guess.
For the most part, I am pretty satisfied with recordings using the XDA. No hard disk spinning or tape noise. :)
Speaking of buttons, it looks like there could have been an App2 button (app1 is calendar, app3 is contacts on the T-Moble XDA),
