I would like to change/add system sounds to my pocket pc. I would really like to use my own sounds for programs like Nice Start. Is there any program like the one on the Jordna that allows sound schem like the desktop or do I have to rename my sounds to the one already on the device?

There's only a limited number of event sounds you can configure (the others are locked by the OS). Goto Start-Settings-Sounds&Notifications-Notifications.

Listed on the drop down menu titled "Select an event" you'll see the events that you can customize. As for using your own sounds, just place your WAV files in the windows directory beforehand and they'll appear under the second dropdown menu. You cannot copy over or delete the WAV files supplied by the OS so if there are any programs that are "hardcoded" to point to a specific WAV file, you're out of luck unless the program itself allows sound customizations.

Doing a Google search on "Pocket PC" sound schemes would have helped. I found Applian's Sound Effects (http://www.applian.com/pocketpc/SoundEffects/index.php) by doing just that.

Actually, I believe you can customize sounds in ROM by copying files over them. I just did that with two sounds on my iPAQ (the jacket insertion sound and the menu pop sound, the latter of which required a soft reset to take effect).

Also, if the program is hard-coded to use sounds that it installed, he can save those files and replace them with similarly named ones of this own choice.

Funny. I tried that with the ActiveSync connect sound and the OS wouldn't allow it.

You can change that sound with the Sounds & Notifications settings applet, though. :-)

I wrote a review of Sound Effects if anyone is interested in its capabilities.

Put some of these sounds on your PPC and you'll get looks from people, I promise. Also, StarTrek wavs make for good attention getters!

I actually only tried it as a proof-of-concept before replying to this thread. So I guess if there were specific programs that were directly linking to this file as opposed to the event, you'd be stuck. Though I don't know of any such programs, so perhaps its a moot point.

I read your review - excellent. By the way - seems that Applian took your comment regarding cost to heart - Sound Effects now priced at $9.95 rather than the $19.95 noted in your review.
