I have XP Pro at home a fixed IP address with a always on DSL connection through a Draytek Vigor 2600We router. I would like to set up a VPN connection to be able to log into my home PC when I am away working. I have a e740 Wi-Fi which I would like to use for the purpose. I don't really understand what I should do to set up the VPN. I know the router supprts VPN's but do I have to do anything like port forwarding or NAT. Those bits I don't understand. Can anyone point me in the direction of a simple step by step set up?

I have sucessfully set up a VPN on my XP Pro box behind a Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router. However, I have not been able to ActiveSync over the VPN connection, and I don't know why.

In order to set up the connection, you may want to check out these (http://asia.cnet.com/itmanager/netadmin/0,39006400,39050037,00.htm) instructions courtesty of cnet Asia.

Once you have that all set, first you need to note that you CANNOT ESTABLISH A VPN SESSION FROM IDENTICAL SUBNETS. This means you cannot establish a VPN session when you're behind the same router you're trying to access. Nor can you establish a VPN session from any other router that uses the same subnet (usually 192.168.1.x).

After that, you need to enter your router's setup page and forward two ports to your server computer, 47 and 1723, both TCP. I should note this is substantially less troublesome if the server computer has a static IP behind your router, ie, 192.168.1.2

After that you should be all set. You can see my instrcutions for getting the e740 to work here (http://filebox.vt.edu/users/cliss/pocketpc). To be honest though, while my instructions *should* work, like I said, I've never actually been able to make it happen.

Hope that helps,
Casey
