View Full Version : Hard Resets: How Many Is Too Much?

I have a Toshiba e310 that I really like. Its my first Pocket PC and so far it has served me well.

This morning I was reading a book via MS Reader, and the unit locked up. Nothing short of a hard reset would cure it, which I did after waiting several hours to see if the problem would resolve itself. Unfortunately, I had thought about backing up the night before, but didn't. Will definitely do so tonight.

This has happened twice before...once again while reading in MS Reader, and another time when I was having odd issues with changing themes.

I have an extended warranty with Best Buy and I'm wondering if this is a sign that I should take the unit in. Is this normal, to have to hard reset the device 3+ times since I've purchased it?

No. Once is too much, unless you are very prone to beta testing. Are you trying soft resets first? They tend to clear most of my problems. I have had half a dozen assorted PPCs since the first Jornada came out and never have had to hard reset.

If it is always in Reader (or mostly), maybe you have a real bad file.

Even with a bad file, Reader shouldn't cause the machine to do a hard lockup that requires anything more than a soft reset. I've never had to do a hard reset to fixed a locked unit myself; I've done it to solve weird software interaction problems, akin to reinstalling my desktop, but again that's very rare.

So, would it be advisable to take it back to Best Buy? I'm not sure if they'll have the e310, but they may have an equivilant (e335 or e740)

I am sure you are aware that the e740 is not exactly the "equivalent" of the e310

I agree. Once is one times too many. There was one random time where my iPaq hard reset itself (which I also consider unacceptable) but in the 2+ years I've been using PPCs I've never been forced to hard reset.

Bring it back to Best Buy and tell them that unreliability of the device makes it unacceptable. If you happen to go for the e740, I've heard those devices can be rather unstable, but have heard good things from those that have been to update the device to EUU3.

I'm aware of that. If the price difference between the e310 and the e740 isn't too great, I might just pick one when I return the e310.

I'm thinking it would be best to pick up a unit that is still supported, rather than trying to get a unit that has already been discontinued.

Get a new one. Preferably an upgraded model. :D

I just took the e310 back to Best Buy today and picked up an e335. The sales people were very nice about it when I explained what had been happening.
