I know I am not supposed to ask tech suppot questions, but, if I get two of these, one in my laptop and one in my PPC can I set up some kind of ad-hoc wireless network?

They appear to be gone already.

The way WiFi works I'd say you could do that (but I've never done it)

BTW They dont ship outside the US. Bummer

Anyone out there prepared to buy one on my behalf and ship to Melbourne, Australia? I'd be happy to pay in advance for the card and shipping

Shame about the U.S. shipping, I have bought a couple of things now from the U.S. and even paying shipping to NZ and GST they still work out cheaper.

Oh well I guess I will have to stick to a what I have for a while longer.

Nice try, but these were gone even before Jason posted the link. (I know because I saw this a couple of hours ago). You can add it to your cart, but then the following message appears:

"We're sorry, but there are only 0 items available for item #633616.
Please click the view cart button above to review your order.
Your order quantity has been adjusted."

The quantity was adjusted to zero.

Yes you can - and you can use your computer as a gateway to browse the net etc.

You will have to wait for another deal though...

I absolutely know I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure you need a router first. I don't think two 802.11b cards can talk directly to each other. Can anyone else verify or refute what I am saying? I cannot see two laptops in my home unless the router is enabled.

Yes you can!

More info on how to setup here: http://www.practicallynetworked.com/support/adhoc_setup.htm

You can also follow the 802.11 card utility when installing.

You don't need a router... I'm running a wireless network in my apartment with a relatively old (Win 98) desktop hooked up to the cable modem and a Siemens Wireless USB adapter. My wife and I are able to connect "ad hoc" to the wireless network, internet, etc.. No router required...

Son of a... I bought one of these from Fry's about 2 weeks ago - paid $99, and only a $15 rebate!

You can. I have an ad-hoc network at home, not with my pda though (laptop to desktop/gateway). But I think the hardware/drivers are much more picky, and the setup might be tricky. I would like to move to an AP solution at some point.

Ad-hoc works well on the road where you want to limit the amount of devices and cables you carry around. I haven't yet figured out how to connect to the internet via Ad-Hoc. I've tried many methods of bridging my dial-up account with my ad-hoc connection to no avail.

On a home set-up, a WAP is a must IMO.

Send me a ticket to Melbourne and I'll deliver one by hand. As these cards are sold out, I'll even pick up the cost for the card. :-D

Steve

P.S. I was in Melbourne in July 2001, and it was pretty decent. I'd love to see summer there. <hint, hint> :-)

Summer is really good. 3-4 hot days (35 degs +) and then a cool one to relieve us. Just spent a bit of time at the beaches down here. You gotta make it here for a summer. Another great time is September on the New South Wales north coast and Queensland.

Look me up!
