View Full Version : Can you stream MP3's via USB connection?
Hi All
Just wondering whether or not it's possible to play MP3s on a Pocket PC directly from your PC's hard drive via the USB connection.
I don't have a sound card on my PC at work and would like to access some MP3's I have stored on the drive.
cheers

Your PocketPC has to have the ability to see your PC (likely it would have to be over an ActiveSync connection). This is not supported out of the box (info is typically pushed and pulled from the PC), but I once heard of a solution that allows your PPC to pull information from your PC in this manner. Not sure if it would work in streaming MP3 music though...

Just noticed you have an Axim X5. I'm not sure if this is financially feasible to you, but if your PC has an Ethernet connection, a WiFi setup works AWESOME in streaming music/video from your PC to your PPC. All you would need is a WAP and a CF WiFi card.
You can also get 512MB CF cards for less than $200 USD. There's a great site located in Australia called PowerInNumbers (http://www.powerinnumbers.com.au) that sells both Transcend and Ridata brand of CF which are both blazingly fast cards.

Can you point me to any directions on how to get the PPC to see the PC over the wireless connection to do this? I have an x5, D-link CF wireless card, and SMC Barricade wireless router.
Thanks

Try Jason's recent thread on Setting Up a Wireless LAN, Part 2 (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2785&highlight=wireless). If you're still stuck, then let me know what you are able to accomplish and where you're stuck and I'm sure either I or one of the posters here can assist.

Used that resource to set up for wireless internet use. I can do internet just fine wirelessly, I am having a hard time being able to access the PC for things like access MP3's off my hard drive on my PPC. Being able to Active Sync wirelessly would be a plus too! I scanned the thread quick and it looks like there may be some later posts that help, will try that tonight.

It sounds like you're connected to some broadband connection because I just realized you're using a wireless router (I assume that's both a router and a WAP). That's outside of my territory since I'm still using a dial-up connection.
With my desktop (winXP), I'm able to access everything while I'm offline, but the moment that main machine goes online (it's configured for ICS), the only thing any of my computers can do is surf the internet. I'm rarely home, so I haven't had time to investigate why, but I'm sure it's security related.
Additionally, my co-worker (he has a DSL connectin), who's also never home, said that he was having problems with his machines seeing eachother but they could access the internet with no problems.
So there's definitely something going on with the broadband connections. Have you tried to do a search on your WAP/router? Also try Brighthand.com if you don't find an answer here.
